I thought I remembered that Robert was gay in the very beginning of the show (maybe in the pilot). Brad Garrett used to frequent and Indianapolis radio show and I remember him talking about this new sitcom he was going to be on and I thought then he was saying his characer was going to be gay. Anybody know??
No, the character wasn't gay in the begining. However, there was an episode where Robert breaks up with Amy and the family thinks he may be gay. But, by the end of the episode, it's resolved and he's not gay....not that there's anything wrong with that.

It is possible that the writers originally wanted Robert to be gay, but since the character is loosely based on Ray's real life cop brother, I doubt it.
