Question Ad-lib or scripted by Joy.....

Joy thought of this great idea........... Is it ad-lib or scripted? Tell us in what episode Freddie's ad-libbing or is it scripted. I'll start to look myself.

I have one! The episode where Ed is having the rummage sale...Maragret's dress gets sold. Is it ad-libbed or scripted where Ed is upstairs in his room eating his lunch and Chico has the dress...and Chico asks for a pickle...a cute scuffle breaks out between them over that pickle. My daughter is sure that little scene was ad-libbed.

I'd sure love to know. Since he likes pickles I wonder if he ever like Arlo Guthrie? Arlo had out a song about "I Don't Want A Pickle". That scene reminds me of Arlo.

Talking

I bet the pickle scene was ad-libbed too. I thought that all along - it was too spontaneous and too unprofessional to even look rehearsed. I love things like that!
I'd also love to be "spontaneous" with Freddie!!!

I think that particular scene was ad libbed.
It was a funny moment between two dear friends. That has always been one of many
favorite scenes.

The episode where Chico and Louie do Ed's taxes,do you think the part where Chico grabs Louie's head and says "ed you forgot your bowling ball."
I think that may have been sponatneous
I was wondering too if the one where Chico gives the serman and he says imagine the hardship of being locked in with all the animals and Ed jumps up and says Imagine the smell! I think that's so funny and I think Chico looks surprised.

Here are some stuff I noticed that seems adlibbed to me:

In the Padre Episode where Chico's Father comes back to find him:

Chico cries when he hugs his father goodbye. After his father leaves & he's looking at the picture of his mom & Ed tells him he'll grow up to be like his dad, he's in tears there too. He walks across the room toput the picture of his mom back & I noticed it looks like he's holding a hanky folded up in his hand. He puts the picture & hanky down.
Lisa Episode: When Lisa come to the garage cuz she's upset cuz her patient Mr. Cobbler died. Before she starts to tell Chico Mr. Cobbler died, Chico looks like he's about to cry.

Chico Almost Goes Into Business With His Cousin: When he hugs Mando goodbye, he looks like he's about to cry.

The Bathtub episode where he wants to put in a bathtub for himself in the garage & the inspector won't let him live in the van cuz it's against a city ordinance:

After the inspector guy leaves Chico is sitting on the stairs & he looks so sad like he's about to cry. Poor thing is in tears. Makes me want to put my arm around him & comfort him. He starts talking to Ed about how he's gonna be homeless again & he sounds so sad & down. When Louie walks into the garage, Chico gets up to talk to him. As he's walking towards Louie, Chico is wiping tears from his eyes with his fingers. Bless his heart!

The episode where Ed meets Shirley Shrift (played by Shelley Winters) & winds up going out on a date with her:

When she comes to the garage to go out with Ed, she tells Chico & Ed the story of how her late hubby Max died & how he died by being hit by a snow plow. I noticed when Chico is hearing her story of how her hubby died, he looks like he's about to cry & gets tears in his eyes & is blinking his eyes like he is blinking tears from his eyes. He acts like he's all choked up & he swallows hard like he's got a big lump in his throat. He keeps blinking his eyes the whole time... It's so cute how Freddie Prinze is blinking his eyes when he is blinking the tears from his eyes. I could sense that Chicos tears weren't in the script here but were Freddie Prinzes reaction to hearing the story of Shirley Shrifts husbands death.

The episode when Ed tells him he doesn't want him anymore & wants him to leave. In one episode, I think it's that one, he looks like he's about to cry & he swallows real hard a couple of times like he's got a big lump in his throat & is about to burst into tears...

The one where Rev. Bemis isn't popular with his church congregation anymore & he gets Chico to preach at his church & they like Chico better & Chico & Ed try to get the folks to like Rev Bemis again.
It's a scene where Rev Bemis comes to the garage & tells Chico & Ed that is has written a letter to the Elders of the church to resign. Chico sees the Revs letter has tears on it. The Rev gets to crying. I noticed when Rev Bemis cries, Chico looks like he's about to start crying too & there tears in his eyes. It's so sweet how he cared about the Rev. You can tell it really got to Freddie. What kept Chico from bawling was the church ladies come in there to see him. It was sooo sweet...

The episode where Ed's ex-friend Guerra comes in the garage to have his car fixed & Chico tries to get them back together.
There is a scene more towards the end where Chico tries to get Guerra to go upstairs to talk to Ed. After he talks to Guerra & Guerra goes to the steps & stops a minute. Chico looks like he's about to cry. He's blinking tears from his eyes & he looks sooo sad. Guerra starts walking up the stairs. I noticed that Chico had tears in his eyes & his eyes are shining with tears. I noticed that if you look real good you can see tears coming out of his eyes & streaming down his face. He looks like he's about to bawl his eyes out. It's so sad... They turn the camera away from Chico to show Guerra knocking on the door. I bet they did that not only cuz that was next in the scene but probably so Chico could regain his composure. After Ed lets Guerra in, Chico starts to get happy again. I could tell that this wasn't written in the script but that Freddie was truly sad when he was in this scene & it made him really sad. I bet he thought he had no one that cared even that early in the series. Poor baby! I bet folks probably thought he was just crying cuz he was soft-hearted & the scene got to him which it did, but never knew how sad he truly was.

I esp noticed in in some of the episodes where he cried. But in some of the funny parts I saw some adlibbed looking stuff. If I notice it again I'll post it here...

Sad

Oh yes, Cheryl, I have noticed all those times where he seemed about to cry that might not have been in the script. There is one that you missed that I can imagine was written as that he should be upset, but he actually seems to be crying--when Marilyn returns the engagement ring and he turns away and leans against the gas pump and rubs his eyes, I think he had started to cry.

I remember that in the Marilyn episode! I forgot to add that. Poor memory LOL! You're right. He starts to cry there. I could sense that wasn't in the script but his real feelings cuz he was really getting into the character. You can tell he's really crying... Also in later epsiodes where girls broke up with him or turned him down for marraige like the Nancy episode. He didn't seem to cry as much in those. It's like he took being turned down a little better...

I like the FUNNY ad-libs...like the one from the bicycle balancer episode...well, maybe that was more of an accident than an ad-lib, where Ed comes in dressed up as that Colonel Sanders looking man with a cane and accidently bumps Chico on the...ummm...let's just say somewhere in the vicinity of chicote with the cane. The look on Freddie's face was so funny.

Oh yea I noticed how Ed taps Chico with the stick "there" too and the look of disbelief on Chico's face (too cute). I wouldn't mind, accidently on purpose, giving Chico a little tape "there" myself!!!!
