Default The Scoop on Time/Life's DVD on DVD set

I called Time/Life today to find out why the DVD on DVD set wasn't up yet on their site. This is what I learned:

1) It isn't on their website yet because it isn't in the warehouses yet.

2) It will start to be advertised on TV beginning Dec. 23rd.

3) You can get one DVD for $24.95; a set of five for $99.96; or all ten DVD's (40 episodes total) for $199.96.

This is pretty much what I thought, price wise, Time/Life would do. You can also get them on VHS for a lower price (but I didn't pay attention to what the lady was saying on that because I was focusing on the DVD aspect of the set).

I still think Doug's set will be the better buy in the long run. But if you must buy this set, do it from Doug's site so he can apply the money to his set and maybe keep the cost down.

B&W "the first DVD in the set is supposedly called 'THE STICK BOY' according to the Time/Life rep I spoke to - weird title, huh?!!" fan

Default A modification

In looking at the episode listings for the first 5 DVD's at walnuttimes, I'm probably guessing that the lady at Time/Life was saying "The SICK Boy" to me, and not "The STICK boy." But it sure sounded like "STICK."

B&W "now it makes more sense" fan

B&W fan!! I had been wondering just what eps were on the DVD's! I definitely want Volume 2--"Where Did I Come From?" and "That's My Boy??" are two of my faves. Plus I'd love to see the making of the "Walnut" show!

Default That Richie's A Smart Boy!

Guys,
I had Richie do the math for me, and here's what he came up with:
It looks like the price for the T/L edition of DVD on DVD will run about $5.00 per episode, not counting extras.
Frankly, I'm not sure if that's a bargain or not. Consider this; MTM's complete first season lists for about $50.00. At 24 episodes, that works out to just over $2.00 per. And it's got plenty of extras. Add to that the fact that you can now get it on Amazon.com for as low as $31.99 new, then we're talking $1.33/episode, $8.00/disc.
But then there's "The Ultimate Johnny Carson Collection - His Favorite Moments from The Tonight Show (Vols. 1-3) (1962-1992) (1962)". It lists for $90.00, but sells on Amazon.com for $70.00, and is only 3 discs. That's $23.00/disk!
So, I'm not sure what to think of T/L's pricing. All I know is I'm greedy, and I want the whole collection of TDVDS, uncut, commercial free, with extras, and somebody'd better get it to me soon!
Thanks Rich.

Steve,

This is exactly, and I do mean EXACTLY, what I have been talking about ever since we heard the Time/Life deal had been made. I KNEW they'd hit us for somewhere between $20 to $25 per disk (and that does NOT include shipping), with only 4 episodes on a disk. It's their standard MO, and frankly it stinks!!!

I own the MTM 1st Season DVD set and did the math just like you did. Basically, I feel that episodes shouldn't amount to more than $2.00 a piece for a half hour show, maybe $3.00 max for an hour long show. Look at season sets of not only MTM, but others as well. Generally, it works out to the figures you and I have come up with. NOT $5.00 per episode!

The only exception to this rule of buying dvd's, at least in my book, will be Doug's release of all the episodes. He will be including a beautiful Ottoman to keep them in, along with many specials and extras. Naturally, since he is doing this with his own money, and not thru a huge company like Fox or Universal, it's gonna cost a bit more. And I understand that and am willing to pay closer to $5.00 per episode. But this is a rare exception for me, not the rule.

Time/Life is a HUGE company and has no business, IMHO, charging these amounts. Again, go to amazon.com and do checks for shows like M*A*S*H, All in the Family, The Jeffersons, The Simpsons, The Twilight Zone, and many more TV shows, and you will see that the Time/Life price tag is ridiculously high.

Oh well, you got me started on another rant. Sorry.

B&W "Between Columbia House and Time/Life, you can get rooked big time when buying VHS or DVD releases. My general advice is to stay away from them, but to each his own." fan
