Default Foreign Movies - What would you recommend?

Of course there are thousands of them, but what foreign movies do you think deserve attention, that is a favorite of yours, or you would recommend?

Here are a few that come to mind:

Most recently:

Amelie - fun, humorous, and great filming technique. Currently #17 on Imdb top 250. You won't regret this one.

The Devil's Backbone - spooky, sad, cathartic. Stylish and very solid. See it.

Amores Perros - Just translate this. Man, this is rough camp, but it generates much true to life grit in these interlocking stories.
You'll need a shower afterward.

Other ones:

City of Lost Children
Man Bites Dog
Cinema Paradiso
Run Lola Run

More will come to mind.

Cool

I dig foreign films! woo hoo!
one of my favs is la petite voluese - the little thief. It's about a teenage girl in late 50's France, I think. She goes all nutty - shoplifting, smoking, you know.
She has quite a little adventure, plus shes adorable as heck.

Another one I have in my collection is Johnny Stecchino <sp?> with Roberto benigni - who totally rules. He looks just like a sicilian crime boss and, of course, hilarity ensues. Anything with him in it is real good -- The Monster, Life is Beautiful;
Night on Earth is an american movie with him in it from a long while ago. It has several different skits in taxis all over the world, his skit is priceless. He confesses to this clergyman about having sex with anything that moved, i cried through the whole scene from laughing so hard.

Madchen im uniform is real old -- 30's maybe, black and white. Its about young girls in a German boarding school and one of them becomes infatuated with her female teacher.

i guess this one would count as foreign, i finally got it on dvd, im so happy. Prince of the Sun with Cynthia Rothrock - who is amazing and right on in this one. Its kind of like watching an ep of speed racer- the voice overs are so hilarious. I dont think its available to buy in the usa, but it can be rented sometimes. i bought a region 2 dvd on ebay because my player is modified to play everything. this is probably one of the movies people ask me for copies of more than anything. Lots of priceless dialog and really great kung fu.

I want to see Hard Boiled.
Criterion released a dvd edition of it that is now out of print and usually goes for around $100 give or take on ebay.

"Ran" is one Japanese movie (amongst others) I would recommend.
Based loosely on King Lear, I saw this many years ago and really liked it.

Hard Boiled is excellent. I think I saw Ran as well. You're right, a very good movie.

I saw a great Foreign film a couple months ago called Malena. It won an Oscar in 2000 for best Foreign film I believe and I thought it was a great film. Other Foreign films iv'e enjoyed were: Amelie, Ponette, and Kolya.

Like Water for Chocolate is a good foreign film. Also, if it qualifies as a foreign film, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.
