Hi!

I just tuned in to watch Cheers on Nick at Nite. . (something I hardly ever do..) and I just got to thinking.. I definitely remember a longer version of the theme song/opening with scenes from the show in addition (or maybe instead of?) the familiar bar room photo opening.. This would have been back when the show first aired.. does anyone else remember this, and does this opening ever air anymore? Or is it always cut in syndiation?

Just wondering..

The opening to Cheers was always the various photos (never scenes from the show) but the full opening is usually shortened in syndication.

It has become very rare, but they do show the long version from time to time.

The closest we'll might ever come to the full openings on N@N is now in the 200th episode. Not the openings, but right at the end of part 2. The extended version of the theme, with all the clips from past episodes.

About the 200th episode:

Has anyone else noticed that in ep #200, they show this whole scene where Carla is talking to Norm. She's telling how it's great to be in charge of the bar because if a customer does something that ticks her off, she can spit in their drink. Then Norm remembers saying something bad about Carla earlier. So he tries to switch beers with Cliff. Cliff comes out from the poolroom and promptly says "Carla, I'm sorry I called you a sawed off witch." Then Norm does a spit take.

In the episode in which this scene came from, everything after the spit in their drink part is cut.

When cheers first started out on N@N, they always showed the long version of the song. (Hey if you want to see the full versions of the song, I got them on video on my HD, just PM me!)

I'm surprised they never made a syndication airing of the facts of life theme song

like Freakzilla mentioned, your probably remembering is the 2 1/2 minute version played at the end of pt.2 of the 200th anniversary episode. it had 3 verses and 3 refrains, and was played during clips of the show from previous episodes. it used none of the opening theme pictures/drawings. (like PanamaMike said, the opening theme never used any scenes from the show, only pics/drawings)
the 200th episode itself has different themes. im not sure on NBC (im thinkin it used regular themes on both parts)(a regular theme is one verse and one refrain), but in syndication, the first part uses the regular theme, but uses the short theme (just a refrain) on the 2nd. that first part is the Only episode in syndication that uses a regular theme. on N@N, they are both short (big surprise).
also on the first part, the opening theme doesnt have the regular ending it usually does, on All airings(synd,N@N, etc). After "u wanna go where everybody knows your name" the music changes to a instrumental refrain, as the "Created by..." pic fades to the same pic on a big screen, and it zooms out, showing the cast on a big stage. its actually kinda cool

N@N shows the regular length theme, only occasionally in later seasons (late Rebecca yrs). thats because some episodes couldnt be edited to the exact time wanted, so they keep the regular length theme and cut some more of the actual episode out
they used the regular length theme when they first showed Cheers in Oct 2001, because they were trying to show "uncut" versions of the episodes, but it didnt work(time wise w/ commercials) so in that November they started using the short theme.

syndication opening themes are only the first few notes of the regular theme, then it cuts to the refrain, skipping any pictures from during the verse. the one exception is the drawing of the outside of Cheers in the 1800's. in seasons 1-4, because there arent as many ppl in the cast, it Does fade from real-life-outside of Cheers to the drawing and then fades to the logo picture, but in all later seasons, it cuts straight from the real-life outside of Cheers to the logo picture. all NBC/N@N short themes are the cut-straight-from-the-real-life-Cheers-to-the-logo-pic. (ill ignore all video tape releases of the show cuz theres too many variations to explain here)

I can only recall watching one episode recently that featured the full theme song, it wasn't the 200th, and that was practically the one episode I didn't tape! As far as the cut episodes go, Cheers used to be on more than one channel here, and it would be fun to watch the episodes on Nick at Nite, and then on the other channel, and compare the different edited versions. For example, the other channel just recently aired the Christmas Cheers episode, which I had never seen, and then I watched it on N@N and the other version cut out the whole part with Sam & Rebecca and the Mistletoe, and I could notice some difference in the N@N editings too.

I can remember watching a few episodes, the only one I can clearly remember is No Rest For The Woody, on NAN and it had the full theme, but the next time they were shown, the short version was aired...

I noticed that, too.

I assumed the abbreviated version was because of the all important $$$$$$$$.

Less time on the theme song=more revenue.
