"Hi Lucy"...."Ms. Ball, it's a pleasure"....."My name is Jonathan, I've loved you all of my life! I decided to move to Hollywood because of all the fun Lucy Carmichael seemed to be having. When I arrived the first thing I did was buy a ‘map of star homes‘, spending 2 hours driving around Beverly Hills until I found your home."
Ok, so my initial, "How'd ya do", needed work (why didn't I think of that then), but I was nervous as hell, and could be barely keep my car on the road, much less think of the right thing to say to the greatest comedian to walk the face of the earth. I guess I should explain, one of my best friends knows someone, who knows someone, who knows someone, who knows someone, who knows someone, who knows the great Lucille ball. Someone how all of these connections conspired and arranged that I, at 18, a freshman at the University of California, majoring in journalism, be one of the few interviewing Lucille Ball on the subject of the 30th anniversary of "I Love Lucy. The landmark sitcom, airing for the first time in 1951, and rating #1 during much of it's six year run, without a doubt one of the great programs in television history (Personally, as a side note, I must to admit to loving Ms. Ball's other classic sitcom "The Lucy Show" (1962-1968) just alittle more). Who doesn't have at least one favorite "Lucy" episode? Lucy and Ethel in the candy factory. Lucy stealing John Wayne's footprints from Grauman's Chinese. Lucy getting wasted on what one is suppose to take to "spoon your way to health" (After a few swigs, she certainly wasn't feeling any pain). The list goes on and on, but one thing remains the most important, Lucille Ball is hilarious. Getting closer and closer to 1000 North Roxbury drive, sweating profusely in a suit that I only wear on special ocassions, meaning it's never been worn. In the back of my mind I went over everything I wanted to ask her. I had all of it written down, but I knew I would be nervous and honesty I've been known to be bit of a klutz when I'm nervous. Preparing myself, as I turned onto Roxbury, It finally hit me...I'M GOING TO BE INSIDE OF LUCILLE BALL'S HOME...MANSION!!!!!! My eyes as wide as Lucy Ricardo coming up with another wacky scheme, and as glared as if I'd taken one to many sips of vitameatavegamin, the next thing I see is a figured with pinkish-orange hair right in my cars path...It's Lucy! I slam on my brakes and thankfully no one is hurt! "What the hell is your problem!?!" asks a shaken, and highly upset Lucille Ball. Even with tinted sunglasses on I could see that those expressive eyes were not to pleased with me. "L...Lu....Luc....LUCY!!!!!" I said, frightening her even more. "Yes it's Lucy, and if you don't mind, Lucy's going back home and never taking a walk around this neighborhood again." She turned and headed toward her home. I quickly got out of the car and profusely apologized to her. Explaining who I was, and the reasoning for my carelessness being I was scared half to death about meeting and interviewing her (although, I was pretty sure any chance for an interview was out of the window). Maybe because I was a 18 year guy about to cry in the middle of Beverly Hills, but for whatever reason she let out a slight laugh and said, "Some kid, tries to kill me to make sure he has a good story for his paper." "You mean you're still going to give me the interview?" "Sure", she winked. "Just let me drive us back to the house." "You want to drive my car?" I asked as I went into shock...again, thinking "Lucille Ball wants to drive my car!!!!" "Yes" She said, "The tour buses will be around any minute, and I'll be damned if I let you behind the wheel when I'm in the car." I handed over the keys, Lucy and I got into the car. (To Be Continued - possibly, lol) If it's no good, well I'm bored...
