Dick Van Dyke on Coach - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

That was a side-splitting cameo by Dick Van Dyke on the Christmas episode, Christmas of the Van Damned (great title).
It's the one where Luther traces his family tree and attends a holiday party at his newfound relatives' home.
Just as Luther says to Hayden, "Nobody here even looks like me.", Dick Van Dyke walks by. He had Luther's mannerisms down perfectly--the slumped shoulders, hands in his pockets, the insecure sideways walk, even the sad sack face. Of course, his hair was combed like Luthers, and he was wearing Luther-style clothes.
Naturally, Luther didn't even notice him, but Hayden was astonished and dropped his jaw.
I had no idea it was coming, and literally screamed when Dick walked into the scene. The fact that he didn't have any lines made it even funnier to me. Ingeniuos. I was glad I had it taped so I could replay it a few times.
I wonder if he makes another appearance on Coach? I know Jerry's appeared on Diagnosis Murder.

Hey Janice, unfortunately Dick only appeared in that one episode. You're right about how funny it was when he walked accross the room just like Luther.

I have to admit though, my favorite part of that episode was the end. I have to admit it made me cry. What a great show. I miss it so much!

That end scene, where they brought Christmas to Luther's place, was very touching indeed.
Coach has moved me to tears on several occasions. Last night's 2-parter when Luther left to be head coach at another college got to me. Hayden's speech at the football banquet saying how they had been together for 28 years, and that Luther was his best friend had me choked up. It was so sad when Luther was saying goodbye to everyone in Hayden's office.
Kelly, sobbing in her father's arms when Stuart left her, crushed me. When the screen went to black to the credits, they allowed her sobbing to continue over dead silence. My husband cried over that one too.
Coach, as hilarious as it is, is loaded with emotion as well.

You've made me want to share some of my favorite touching moments from the show. I'll be curious to see if any of these moved you, as well.

When Hayden shows up at Dauber's graduation, and hugs him.

In the episode following Kelly's break-up with Stewart, Hayden recognizes his failure to effectively comfort Kelly and he says on the verge of tears, "I know this makes me a bad father to have to ask you this, but...how can I help?"

As we mentioned, the end of the Christmas episode with Dick. Again, the words Hayden uses are so sweet when he says to Luther, "We just felt that our Christmas was one person-short."

The episode where Kelly leaves the show was very touching with the flashbacks.

I thought the episode where Luther reunites with his Dad had several touching moments. My favorite is toward the end at Luther's apartment when his dad says, "I feel you're the only successful thing that I've ever been a part of, and as small a part as that was, it's the only thing in my life that I'm proud of." And then Luther says, "You mean that?" The look on his face said that after 49 years, he finally knew that his dad loved him and was proud of him and that meant the world to him. Awwww....

I'm going to cry again!

Those were touching episodes. I've seen them all with the exception of Kelly's farewell. I look forward to that.
Luther's reunion with his long-lost father was a tearjerker. I remember he asked his father if he had left because he was a 'messy kid'.
I don't recall any specific scenes, but I know there were quite a few emotional scenes during the time of Hayden and Christine's breakup.

I think the most moving thing during the month of the breakup was the end of the episode that flashes back to when they first met. On the balcony, they want so much to hold each other, but they can't. It's especially touching with Christine has to go back to the ball, and she walks away from Hayden who watches her leave, and then she turns around and just looks at him from a distance. Very tender stuff.

On a totally trivial note, the music that plays throughout that scene, is the exact same music they used for the Drewer's Coffee commercials, later on.

That was a very touching scene at the ball. If I'm not mistaken, that took place during the flashback episode of Hayden and Christine's first meeting.
Another sad episode was when Hayden's former star player returns, and tells him he has cancer which was probably brought on by steroids.
Some storylines are indicative of the times. Lyle Alzado died in 1992 from what many believe was steroid-induced cancer. This was the same year that episode aired.
Drewer's coffee, lol. That episode was hilarious. All the dialog led back to the coffee. What was that slogan the older guy would say? Drink Drewer's...and see what happens next. Something like that. Help me out highloon.

As for the Drewer's ad campaign, again it was around the same time that there was a real-life series of ads running with that couple ala soap-opera style. What coffee was that??

Janice, you are so close with the Drewers tag line. It's, "Say yes to Drewers, and see what happens next." And of course Hayden's take on what happens next is, "'Well they have more coffee and then they both have to pee!" But I digress...

Regarding the real-life coffee commercial soap opera at the time, I believe it was Maxwell House, if memory serves. Thankfully none of this is important in the least.

I'm sorry to hear that you too have no life. I'm sure we both mean it light-heartedly, but still, I was thinking about what a wonderful wife I have to enjoy my days with, no matter what I'm going through. I may have a bit too much free time, but with her by my side, I definitely have a life.

It's my hope that you can relate to these sentiments. I suspect you can...

Yeah, I was kidding. I do have a life. I'm just not working now, so I've got free time to play around on Sitcoms Online. Not to get morbid here, but both my parents took ill last summer (2001)...my father with a massive stroke, then cancer, and my mother with cancer. My mother passed away this past March and my father in May. They were so healthy before. It happened so fast.
I quit my job to care for them, and I think I'm just in recovery mode now. My mother was only 67. This holiday season is tough but I'm doing a bangup job of going through the motions.
Fortunately, I have a wonderful, supportive husband with a great job, so money's a non-issue. That's my tale of woe. How's that for serious?

I'm glad for you highloon that you have a wonderful wife to share your time with, and she loves Coach too. She's a keeper for sure.

Janice, I had no idea that that's what your year has been like. Your posts are so flavored with mirth that I never would have suspected that you were facing such struggles this Christmas. I won't dwell upon them here, but I just want to say that I hope, despite the recent tragedies and current heartaches you're dealing with, that you have a joyful, meaningful Christmas and a new year filled with brand new hopes and dreams!

BTW, you're right. My wife is definitely a keeper!

Thank you, as well, for the kind sentiments. I'm glad you're in the Christmas spirit. These days, most people seem jaded about such things, especially here in Las Vegas. Your attitude is a breath of fresh air. Merry Christmas to you, too! May you never recieve the gift of a basketball pin from your husband, and if he happens to give you a diamond ring, may it never be purchased from a dentist! (or a barber, or the manager of a professional heavy-object juggler)
