Do the detectives really like each other? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Do you think they all like each other, or do they just tolerate each other? My opinions:

A lot of the time, Harris doesn't really seem to like his fellow detectives. I think he respects Barney a lot, but sometimes he just gives off this air of arrogance. I think deep inside he does like Dietrich and respects his vast knowledge of things. During the qarantine episode he let his true feelings show.

I think Wojo does like his fellow detectives and cares about them. Under hypnosis, he expressed his true feelings, but I still think he liked them all.

I also think Dietrich likes the others even though they all get annoyed at him. He even likes Levitt and is the only one who called him Carl. He's not arrogant, and seems that he shares his knowledge of things, not to impress, but it's just the way he is.

It's apparent that Barney does like and care for his detectives.

Nick was pretty easygoing, and I think he did like all of them.

They all respected Fish. Wojo even said that Fish was the closest thing he had to a father since arriving in New York. Fish in turn seemed to be closer to Barney and Nick. The younger detectives got on his nerves a lot, but he probably liked them.

Because he had a lot of respect and genuine regard for Barney, Inspector Luger liked the others by default. He didn't seem like he knew them very well. At first it seemed to me that the detectives didn't like Luger, but later on they were all happy every time he visited.

The jury is out on Levitt...

Chano was very likeable, and in my opinion his character didn't get a chance to develop like the others did.

Of the female detectives, Wentworth was the one who seemed more at ease with the other detectives.

In conclusion, I will say that yes, they all genuinely liked each other, some more than others and there were always tensions. They were all complex characters, particularly the post-Fish era. I think that Harris was the more complex character of them all and Ron Glass did a fine job of pulling off a very believable character who dealt with being pulled in non-conventional directions.

I think all of the detectives liked each other in varying degrees. Barney appears to me to be closest with Wojo. Wojo has more personal conversations with him and spends the most time in his office.
Fish was a living legend to all of them, case closed on that one.
They all really liked Nick. I haven't seen enough of Chano or the women detectives to give an opinion.
Harris likes everyone, but I think he likes Dietrich the least. I didn't see the quarantine episode referred to maclen, so I'm not working with all the facts on this one, but it appears that Harris is jealous of Dietrich because of his superior intellect. It seems that Harris tolerates him.
There's a fondness that's evident between Wojo and Harris. They interact well, and I don't see any biting sarcasm there.
Dietrich is so laid back and seems to like everyone.
The characters are so well-developed and complex.
Wojo, with his hangup about women prostitutes and then ends up falling for one. He has strong convictions about many social issues.
Harris, outwardly flamboyant, but an intense man who won't take an ounce of crap from anyone. You gotta love Harris.
Dietrich, a tough read. He may be spouting off stats and theories, but he never gives himself away.
Levitt, a few fries short of a happy meal for sure, but a good guy.
Barney, what you see is what you get. He's a very decent man in a difficult job trying to maintain some semblance of order with these complicated men.

To me, they give off a family dynamic. Even in the closest of families, people tend to annoy one another and you have at least one or two arrogant members. However, when it really counts I believe that they are there for one another and they truly care about each other.

Y'all are right, they definitely all like each other. They annoy each other sometimes, too, but they do like one another. The quarantine episode was a great example of how the other detectives get on Harris's nerves. The strike episode is another example. They all sat around the squadroom and told each other how they really felt. Nick said how he was fed up with the coffee jokes and Wojo said how he felt Harris showed off too much. But at the end they were all friends again.

As far as Harris and Dietrich go, I think they do like each other. Harris often seems annoyed with Dietrich, but he doesn't seem to actually dislike him. Don't forget that they lived together for quite a while, too! I know my roommates got on my nerves all the time!

One dynamic that's always lurking is that they all have and will again depend on one another in dangerous situations. That plays a part on their humor and their sarcasm with one another. Notice that when word comes in that one of them might be in trouble things become very intense in the squad room.

This is so true Kitt. Barney almost goes crazy with worry and concern, and for that period until things are okay, the humor is just about dropped for a while.
The writers were smart not to overuse these moments, but they were interesting to watch, and they did indeed reinforce the fact that these men were friends and cops who would lay their lives on the line for one another.

Yes, I think they do like and respect each other -- in different degrees -- and like a family the detectives are loyal to each other. . They were complex characters -- well written and well played.

I think the only one the detectives didn't really care for was Luger. Not that I blame them.
