Default Can someone explain the crossover episode between Different Strokes and Silver Spoons

I found out that Gary Coleman made a guest appearance on Silver Spoos as his original character from Different Strokes. How can this be? I checked the episode description for both shows on the night Arnold appeared on Silver Spoons and neither episode was closed to being connected. I was told that NBC did the crossover attempt to boost ratings for Silver Spoons. But I thought that a character from SilverSpoons had to be connected to one of the characters on Different Strokes for the crossover to make sense. For example, the Different Strokes crossover with Facts of Life makes sense because it's a spinoff of the Ms. Garret character and the crossover with Hello Larry makes sense because the Larry character was old army buddy of Mr. drummond. So if someone saw the crossover episode which was actually a silver Spoons episode, let me know why would the Arnold Jackson character appear on Silver Spoons as his self?

That is very confusing because I might be wrong but I don't even think Silver Spoons was set in New York although I have never seen it.

To get people to watch Silver Spoons they obviously wanted an audience to not only be able to associate with the actor Gary Coleman, but also with the character of Arnold Jackson.

Yeah-i forgot all about the locations of both shows. I do know that Silver Spoons was not in NYC-which made the crossover more strange.

Arnold was visiting Rick (I think that's his character's name erm) to take a picture of him for the school newspaper. I forgot for what though. Anyways, Rick hacked into a government computer which contained plans for a secret plane which made Arnold and Rick nervous. They end up trying to run away.

The episode aired on Nick-at-Nite in March as part of their Revenge of the 80s Week.

But why would Arnold visit Ricky? Ricky was never on DS so that's why it's confusing. And the more confusing thing is that Arnold lived in NYC

Why not? TV doesn't have to make sense all the time. Ricky lived on Long Island from what I've read (or Long Meadow something . . erm) in New York so it shouldn't take that long for Arnold to get there. Arnold was a reporter for the Daily Woodchuck or something like that at his school, and I guess they wanted to feature Ricky for something. The shows were made by the same company so it was used as a ratings booster for SS.

So if he lives on Long Island, that means that it was a shorter trip for Arnold to get to Rick's than it was for Arnold to travel to Peekskill in Upstate NY. So it's not as farfetch'd distancewise. Plus, there's no rule about having the characters crossover to each other's shows.

Maybe they met off set. I know I'm talking about a whole other show now, but look at Archie Bunker's Place. Solomon, I know you didn't want to see the Archie Alone episode, but let me explain just a bit of it. I don't want to make my post really long and drawn out, so let me just make a short note.

Okay, Edith died. They show Veronica crying over Edith's death. Wait a minute, Veronica and Edith never met on screen. Why should Veronica be crying over someone she's never met. We have two paths that we could take. Maybe the Edith and Veronica characters met off screen. The viewers didn't see them meet on screen, but we can't deny that they might have met off screen. Maybe Archie talked so much about Edith off screen that it felt like Veronica had known Edith forever. Maybe it was both. Maybe the Arnold character and Ricky met off screen and that's how the cross overs occurred.

Arnold and Ricky actually met during that episode. Arnold Introduced himself and the audience applauded. Veronica and Edith obviously knew each other off screen.
