Because I am such a nerd, just like my darling Potsie, I sent a letter to one of my old history teachers asking him about the Greenland regiment. My old history teacher is an army veteran and would always answer any questions we had about it. I asked him what army units were stationed in Greenland in 1961...
Camp Tuto was the only camp in Greenland. It was also known as the center for the Army Polar Research and Development Center. It was abandoned in 1965. Now, according to the website, Richie and Ralph went to Fort Silverman. There was no Fort Silverman in Greenland! Now I think that they went to Camp Tuto for a few reasons. 1. Camp Tuto was abandoned in 1965-ish. That gives Richie an appropriate reason to have left the army and come home in time for the Welcome Back Home eps. 2. I went on some military site and asked someone about Tuto, he replied that "some wiseass had carved a chair out of the ice buildup in a cave we were working in" Sounds like Ralph Malph to me. 3. Rumor in Tuto had it that there was a girl hiding behind every tree. Now if Ralph could pick any place in Greenland to go to, where do you think he'd go? 4. Camp Tuto was a research center. The boys would not have to fight. But then why did Ralph try to mail himself home? Hee hee, it'd be interesting to see if there's any more info on Tuto. |
