Sad As Told By His Mother: Mrs. Maria Pruetzel

As a child freddie had asthma real bad. As an adult I still worried about him.
About that same time Kathy's two siamese cats and her doberman moved into the apartment. when I heard about it I said to Kathy, "don't forget that freddie used to have asthma real bad and he's allergic to dogs and cats." so be careful because you can't afford to have freddie sick.

"freddie, you are emotional.you're sensitive.and you've been hurt before.don't get serious about this romance until you are sure." "don't worry, ma. It is my life, my private life. and I want to live it the way I want it."
freddie had never spoken so painly to us before.I knew that day that a breaking point had to come for us.

I hoped he was not making a mistake. I did not feel close to Kathy myself, but to freddie at that moment she was everything! And I knew in my heart I had to step aside.I reached for my purse.
"freddie, I'm going to give you back the key to your apartment. you can have it for Kathy." I'd had the key since I'd first come to L.A. in February. Handing it over gave a strange feeling, as if somehow the passing of that key from me to him was a symbolic act,and that a door between us was now shut.

Oh man that is sad. I could sense his mom was so worried about him. That was too tough a schedule. Maybe he should've wated & done the Vegas gigs on when the show was on hiatus from filming & it wouldn't have taxed him so hard. I rememebr my friend Arlo the singer telling me on time that he won't do 2 gigs int he same nite at 2 different places cuz it's too hard on you. If it's 2 gigs the same nite at the same place, fine but 2 gigs the same nite at 2 different places, no way as it's too hard on ya he said. I think Freddie was trying to do too much other stuff on top of doing the show & it was too tiring for him...

I'm not sure if it was the Playboy article or some other article, but I remember that an interviewer had called Freddie's standup act around this time as "churlish."

Question

What does churlish mean? Anyway, I think maybe Freddie wanted to please everybody. Flying from here to there would be rough on anyone.

I think churlish means something like vulgar or hard to handle or somthing like that I'm not for sure. I don't think it is a good word though. ?????

I think what the interviewer meant was that Freddie seemed haggard and tired and not really into doing his act.

CHURL n. 1 rude or surly person. 2. a stingy person. 3. a rustic; countryman. Maybe they were using the first definition in the description.

the demands from the divorce papers:

$25,000-in lawyers'fees
$10,000-in court cost
$4,000-a month alimony for kathy
$1,000- a month support for the child
as well as retention of all properties held in kathy's name.
plus dental and medical expenses for her and the baby.

this is money that he did not have.
he could not afford a bigger house, and a 24-hour maid.

Sad

what frightened our son to death:

he saw his efforts, everything he had worked for, taken away from him. in his litigation with david jonas, his ex-manager ended up with $205,000. besides that amount, freddie had to pay legal fees amounting to approximately $100,000.

the decision blew freddie's mind. no one that young is that strong. it seemed to my son that he had lost everything. the dream turned into a nightmare so terrible it frightened our son to death.
