NBC was concerned that CBS would put Air Wolf opposite Diffrent Strokes on Saturday night which could have pulled adults away from DS. So a love interest was added for Mr. Drummond for adult appeal.

Initially there was no mention of Sam, if I recall correctly.

I think he was introduced in the trip to Hollywood.
