That must be because you've never seen Magic Carpet! Did you ever see the one with Roz Russell, Auntie Mame? I'd be curious to see what you thought of that one!

Oh, I've seen Magic Carpet. Taped it, watched it, taped over it. I guess they're equal.

And i thought Amy could push my buttons, you could teach a course on it! You know i love you and respect your opinions, so why would you ever compare Magic Carpet, a piece of crap that was filmed in 8 days, that she should have bought and burned all the copies, and Mame for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe award, never looked more regal, the only thing critics harped on were her looks, well she was 62 at the time and sang and danced after a broken leg, starred in a musical after the genre had passed it's prime and the movie still made money for Warners. That you're tired of Lucy, fine, i can dig it, but you're smart enough to make clever remarks, you always do, why stoop to a comment like that, you can do so much better!

I would have to say "Magic Carpet" too...I mean she did tons of b films and some not so hot, but this one takes the cake.
By the way, I like Mame. I mean Lucy is no singer--though I'm glad they didn't try and dub her. Obviously Angela Lansbury would have been the best choice. But, it was kind of nice to see Lucy do something different. I think she handles the non-singing portions of the picture pretty well. I agree too that "stage Door" is a classic. How could a film with Kate Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, Lucy, and Eve Arden not be? |

![]() I do it to stir up trouble. I'll admit it's been years since I've seen Mame. So how 'bout this? It's a step above King Rat a truly horrid WWII flick from 1965. Bet you've never seen that one, huh?

I know you luv to stir up trouble, and i can't blame you for wanting interesting posts on here, but there's some things that you can easily get my dander up and you always KNOW which ones , no wonder you asked me to come on here, you're USING me, but i don't mind so much when it's somebody who knows what they're talking about, and you usually do. To Chuck T, i'll add that the director who was going to do it George Cukor, who would have made it a blockbuster, had to bow out when Lucy delayed the pic by breaking her leg, he would have DIRECTED the picture, not like Bea's husband, who let Lucy do everything her way. When i see her at the top of the stairs WAITING to come down the stairs, it looks like a moron is directing, she kept him on although she KNEW he should have been fired as he was married to Bea, and she didn't want to LOSE her. As for Angela, it was before Murder she wrote, so she wasn't a NAME then, at least not a big enough name! With proper direction, it might have been the Oscar winner she was hoping for to top off her career! Then when she was talked about for Driving Miss Daisy, Gary said no, instead of pushing her to do it, another Oscar chance lost!

Hmm, least favorite Lucy film? "Magic Carpet" is so awful and I know she did it just to get thru with her contract at Columbia, so I will let that one go. I choose "Critic's Choice" with Bob Hope. I don't find the movie the least bit funny. It is by far the worst of the four Hope-Ball films. Though Lucy does look great in it. Hope, though trying to act a romantic leading man--15 years younger than he was--looks old and flabby. By the way on Broadway--Henry Fonda played his part.
Splain, I had no idea George Cukor was to direct "Mame". Yes it could have been an entirely different film if he had done it instead of Herb Ross. He would never have allowed Lucy to be lighted the way she was in some of those scenes. I agree with Chuck T that it is not the complete failure that many people think it was. I know in Leonard Maltin's book he gives "Mame" a BOMB rating--I don't think it deserves that (maybe **). |

What do you mean Herb Ross, he also would have done a great job, it was Gene Saks, Bea Arthur's then husband who ruined that picture. George was the ultimate pro, she would have gotten an oscar nomination with him at the helm, yes buddy, he went instead to Maggie Smith and Travels with my aunt when Lucy's broken leg delayed the picture. Lucy used to say that Oona White helped more with the direction than Gene ever did. Didn't Oona get the oscar for Oliver, i dun't know if she directed it or just choreographed it!
