Question Does Barney get divorced?

This is my first time around with Barney Miller, and I'm just loving the show. They've started to lay the groundwork for Barney and his wife Liz separating. Does anyone know if they get divorced? I suppose I could wait to see how it plays out, but the suspense is killing me. I had no idea about that there would ever be trouble in their marriage.

Default Spare me the one word replies please...

Is there anyone who would be so kind as to explain things in more detail? Are they separated...if so, why and for how long?

I don't know for sure about them separating, but I do know the original idea was to show Barney Miller at both work and home. However, the writers then decided to focus the show at the precinct and phased out Barney's wife and kids.

Well, I would recommend watching the show and finding out naturally, but if you must know , then read below:

From classicsitcoms.com episode guides:

"The long-running storyline that ended in Barney's trial separation from Liz didn't sit well with a sizable portion of the show's loyal audience, and they made their opinions known. Producer Tony Sheehan recalls, "We got letters telling us, 'Don't do this! They have the best marriage on television.' But the funny thing is, she wasn't even on the show anymore! We came up with the separation storyline to bring Barbara back--because we liked her and loved using her character--but before that, they hadn't seen Liz in years! And still we got all these letters about what a wonderful marriage they had."

Did that answer your question?

I'll say! Thank you. I really appreciate it. I could never wait that one out.
Thanks to you also Brian.
It's interesting that, although the viewers hadn't seen Liz in years, they considered their marriage a happy one. The reason for that, I think, is because Barney behaved as a happily married man. He would talk to her on the phone and refer to her with affection. Once, when a pretty woman was putting the moves on him in his office--he was attracted to her, but he told her, "I don't seduce well. I'm a married man."
The first season, viewers saw his wife and observed their strong marriage and solid home life, and that carried on in the minds of viewers long after they discontinued the home scenes.
Personally, I like Barney's character to be married. He's such a well-rounded, stable guy. Besides, I hated seeing him hurt in last night's show where they first introduced the impending separation. (Dog Days episode).

Sorry, i wasn't trying to be smart; I was trying not to give extra stuff away, so you can still get into the storyline.

Later ~

I'm sorry too. I took it the wrong way. I titled the topic, "Does Barney get divorced?" so readers could decide if they wanted to open it and find out. I'm not the type who can wait.

If you watched last night's show #100, Open House (well... technically this morning's show. I get to watch it at 11:30 PM), then you know that Barney and Liz are back together!

Lucky you. I get to watch it at 2:30am. Most of the time, I turn the VCR on and watch it the next day. I never miss the show, and yes, it was great seeing Barney get back together with Liz. He looked so happy. Hal Linden's quite a talented actor.

Did you see the New Year's episode where Liz helped deliver the Puerto Rican lady's baby? She and Barney had such a sweet hug after the baby was born. I love that episode. Awwww...
