Do any of you think that Gloria's reaction to Edith not wanting to report the man who tried to rape her was a little harsh? I was looking at a post a ways down the board about Gloria's immaturity, and her immaturity never really bothered me a whole lot except for in this episode. I mean her mom had just been attacked two weeks earlier, so for Gloria to call her selfish, and especially for her to say you are not my mother anymore was not only immature, but down right nasty in my opinion. In all honesty as she was yelling at her mom she looked like a mad woman I thought.
I think what upset me the most about this episode was that you would think that since Gloria had been through the same trauma a few years earlier that she would have had a little more compassion for her mom. I mean in the episode where Gloria was attacked, she was scared and confused too, and Edith didn't yell at her like that. Also Gloria herself didn't report her own attacker, so how could she get mad at her mom for not wanting to report hers? I don't care what my mom says, or does. I Love her, and I would never speak to her in that manner. I realize that the scene made for a very emotional moment, but I don't think any decent child would say such a thing to their own mother. Especially someone as sweet, and caring as Edith. I know that this is just a show and i'm probably taking it too seriously, but I think the writers definitely shouldn't have made Gloria say the things she did. I think this episode showed more than any other how immature, and at times how hot headed the character of Gloria could be. Even Archie in my recollection never said anything that crude. What did you all think of Gloria's reaction in this episode? |

Yeah, it was too harsh, but remember, Edith slapped Gloria for saying that. I would have too. The one good thing that came out of that was Edith going to the Police station to report that guy.

Yeah it was sort of harsh, but remember Gloria was gonna report her attacker. Archie and Mike were the ones that decided that she wasn't going to report the attack and have to stand in court to testify because it would look like Gloria was the one egging the attack on. Gloria knew how her mother felt because she had went through the same issue. Gloria couldn't understand why Edith was thinking so much of herself instead of doing the right thing and help the cops catch the attacker so others wouldn't go through the same situation. Edith wasn't going to go by herself so Gloria had to put out that extra bit of tough love. Sometimes the tough love helps just as much as standing beside a person and supporting them. Gloria did both. jmo

Yeah Jenny, you definitely make a good point. I just don't think under any circumstance you should say something like that to your own mother. I can understand her saying that Edith was selfish, but the part about her not being her mother anymore I thought was terrible. Your right also about Archie, and Mike talking her out of turning the guy who attacked her in. I never understood why Gloria didn't turn him in anyway. After all she was an adult, if she wanted to turn the guy in she had every right to. I think as the seasons went on though Gloria started thinking for herself a bit more and began being more independant. At times I think a little too independant.

I recall another episode where Gloria spoke to Edith in a very disrespectful as well to Archie in the same episode. If you were to see Episode #61, "Battle of the Month", she called Archie stupid. Then she turned around and told Edith she is nothing and her whole life is centered around Archie. Afterwards she got on a tirade with her own husband after he was trying to find out what her problem was. A chick with issues. |

You all make some great points. As much as I disliked the way Gloria talked to Edith. I agree about Toughlove, sometimes it's the only way. That scene moved me to tears also.

Yeah I agree, that was definitely one of the more emotional scenes in the shows history I thought. I even had a few tears rolling down my face, especially when Edith looks at Gloria and say's i'm sorry after she slapped her. You guys are right though, I think I probably am being a little hard on Gloria. After all she and her mom did make up, and I think at the end of that episode Gloria's true colors came out. I still love Gloria!
