Do you insert yourself in a strangers conversation?

Often im in an area where many ppl and the other day 2 people were having a conversation. Due to closeness,it was impossible to not eavesdrop. One person was describing a process. And the name of 1 of the items needed escaped her. I knew what it was and just said it out loud. It became obvious that I did have some level of knowledge of what they were talking about. I like to be friendly,even though more and more ppl are mean to me..
