Have you ever kept your hair at a long length comparable to Sully's on Dr. Quinn (Joe Lando)? I'm curious about your experience, so here are some questions (I'll answer too), please don't feel obligated to reply to all of them:
1. Did you have someone influence you to let it grow, or for some reason? 2. Likewise if you later cut it shorter, was if for a particular reason -- or at someone's suggestion? 3. Was your longer hair harder to maintain than you expected, easier, about the same? 4. At times, did you keep the length 'hidden' to some extent? Or try to, and if so, why? 5. What kind of feedback did you get from family, friends, spouse / lover (or even strangers)? |

Okay, here was my experience:
1. From long-haired toddler (my mom already had a boy, she wanted a girl when I came along) onward from my first cut circa 1968, I always had short to very-short hair up to around 2000. I went a little longer, but I wanted to try long length. And finally I did it: in the mid-2010s it had become long enough to easily cover the tops of my shoulders when pulled. It was my idea solely (and most of you know I love women's long hair). 2. I had all of that length lopped off in Feb. 2022. The reason was my mom's viewing and funeral were impending and most of the people who'd be attending had never seen me with long hair. I was uncomfortable with the idea of being a distraction in that way. I've kept it short since then -- and it's now getting quite grey at the temples especially. 3. I was used to having haircuts every 3 weeks or so when it was short, so actually just rarely getting a trim meant it was easier to maintain. I was careful to have some elastics around, which leads me to... 4. Practically whenever around family, and some of the people who knew me, I tried to hide the length by keeping a bun at the back of my neck, or at the least hiding it inside the collar of golf-type shirts. I was not always successful though, as I was referred to as "the brother with long hair" if someone didn't know our names. Just around strangers I didn't much care so that leads me to... 5. I was putting air in one of my car's tires outside a Belle Tire in 2021 when a total stranger yelled out "Hey, get that long hair cut!" Some guy I'd never seen before in my life. Why did he care that my hair was long?? This points to why I was hiding the length around people I did know -- there was still some expectation that a guy not have long hair. Anyway, one thing I miss was being able to show ladies I knew how much longer my hair had become, if they hadn't seen me in a "long while." Not too many comments ("You had short hair!"), but I will say I was surprised there weren't any negative reactions from them at all. Even if they favored short styles for their own hair! There was acceptance from women, maybe they're just naturally more accepting. |
