A Facebook Long Since Gone

A few short years ago, in the not so distant past,
There was a land called Facebook, where friendships were born,
A virtual land, where chatter and prattle ran fast,
We'd laugh, share, gossip and we'd mourn,
Though, not in the physical, the connections were real and would last.

Eureka! A random idea would hit me in the midst of the day,
Onto Facebook I'd hop, to blab it, so all could play,
20 responses I'd get within an hour, as the count continued up,
"Oh cool!" they'd blast, "Let's chat about it in IM's, hit me up!"
A funny picture I'd post, "Oh Jonna!" they'd reply, "I could see you as this the most!"

A place that was alive with an energy of a time gone-by,
Short chats spawned into wee morning hour heart-to-hearts,
Talk was real, emotions felt, oh how they vowed, "You can't get rid of me even if you try!"
As we fantasized of future days, how we'd be embracing for real one day.

Bonds were formed, sisterhoods cemented, and families chosen, that was the way,
Silly or serious chats about anything or nothing, so was the order of the day,
We solved the worlds problems, we roleplayed and weren't afraid of late-day make-believe,
I got to be Tinkerbell, so cherished and valued, they caused the pain to relieve,
I flew away, just for a short season, to a land where all was just fine, and hope was mine,
We were family, we checked in, just to assure all was fine.

We laughed, we talked, we schemed, and we cried,
Until one day, seems it all just died,
"Hey Tinky! What's my fairy up to? was replaced with, "hey"
All night chats replaced by one-word replies of dismay,
The energy and liveliness that once was, is now the same meme on repeat,
Human emotion replaced with algorithms, an old soul like me just can't compete.

Gone is real discussion and genuine debate,
For any input, no matter the substance, is met with the LOL emoji, like it's fate,
No more check-ins, those are out-of-date,
Human attention spans have long since fled,
All must be quickly swipped, clicked and sped,
Posts must be kept under 2 short sentences, no matter how exciting, nothing more!
Or else, be prepared to be on ignore.

Many say Covid had a hand in it all,
We just never woke back up after the fall,
Others lay the blame on Trump saying he and his hatred is to blame for all,
Smart phones perhaps, some say,
Swipe, scroll, click FAST!! Losing our humanness day by day.
My heart longs for the glorious PAST!

Here's to you old Facebook, I miss you everyday!
When I see something neat, or have a brainstorm idea,
how I wish I could throw it at you and we could all play!
Then the current day reality hits me, if I share it today,
I'll just get back, "yeah"
