Seasons in the sun by Terry Jacks. Sad song from the early 70's. Either the guy was about to commit suicide or he was dying from cancer or another major illness.

With imagery going back to a terrible 1959 plane crash killing several musicians, and full of other lyrics applicable to the times, there is the incomparable 8-1/2 minutes of American Pie. It's one of those songs I've heard so many times, I could probably come close to writing out the entire song by memory.
