The Faith of Aaron Menefee Review
The 1962 Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode “The Faith of Aaron Menefee” was written by Ray Bradbury, based on a story of that title by Stanley Ellin.
Aaron Menefee, played by Andrew Prine, is a garage mechanic. One day three people arrive with car trouble. One of them, Otis Jones, played by Sidney Blackmer, convinces Aaron he is a powerful faith healer. He makes an apparent improvement in Aaron’s condition by praying and laying on of hands, and tells Aaron to come to the meeting for the full treatment. Aaron leaves the meeting convinced that Healer Jones has cured him of stomach ulcers although Aaron’s doctor, Doc Buckles, played by Robert Armstrong, says Aaron never had stomach ulcers. Aaron becomes a devoted follower of Healer Jones, convinced he can cure any ill, until his belief is put to the ultimate test. Though not my favorite episode, this was well written, acted, and filmed. |
