Default 8.7 On Death and Dying 1-13-03

Scene Opens up at Sugarbaker's
JULIA: Denise, I am quite disappointed at the sales of these dresses.
DENISE: Look Julia, I can't help that.
MARY JO: But you guaranteed satisfaction.
DENISE: Well. I am sorry. My goodness, I figured with the new year starting, people might buy these dresses.
BERNICE: Well, I don't want to offend you, but I wouldn't.
DENISE: Oh, well, that doesn't offend me.
BERNICE: Yes it does. I can tell, because there's a little girl behind those eyes fighting back the tears.
JULIA: Bernice, that's enough of your imput for today.
DENISE: You know, I just can't believe you won't give me a chance.
JULIA: We have given you lots of chances. The fact is, because you have sold very many dresses, you are still working. I am sorry to disappoint you, but Sugarbakers is an interior design firm.
DENISE: Well, you are also carrying Poteet Industries as well.
JULIA: Yes we are, which is why we aren't going bankrupt. Well, I say we all get a bite to eat. My treat. We'll swing by Carlene's place and pick her up.
MARY JO: Yeah, she's been in such hysterics since her guinea pig she got for Christmas just died.
DENISE: I swear, the reasons you women take off from work.
JULIA: Are you coming to lunch?
DENISE: No, I have to stay here to file Carlene's invoices.
JULIA: All right. See you later. (they leave)
DENISE: (phone rings) Sugarbaker's. Yes, this is she...(shock sets in her face) oh my God...All right, I'll be down later. (hangs up the phone as Etienne walks in)
ETIENNE: Hello, darling, where's Anthony?
DENISE: Out on delivery.
ETIENNE: What's wrong, Denise?
DENISE: Well, it's nothing. I can't tell you. I can't tell anybody around here. I've been partner for three monthes now, and no one likes me.
ETIENNE: Well tell me what's on your mind.
Scene is the following day.
JULIA: Have you noticed how strange Denise has been acting today?
SUZANNE: No. I don't pay attention.
MARY JO: Believe me Suzanne, we know.
DENISE: Well, I am headed over to the Pratt house to recall the furnishing. (exits)
ANTHONY: Well, you would not believe the bond Etienne and Denise have formed.
MARY JO: Bond? We didn't know that Denise bonded with anyone.
ANTHONY: Well, brace yourself. The future of Sugarbaker's is at stake. It appears that Denise might be pulling her shares.
MARY JO: She can't do that! We'll go out of business.
SUZANNE: How would you? You have Bo Peep Industries.
MARY JO: That's Poteet, Suzanne.
SUZANNE: Who cares!
JULIA: Are you sure?
ANTHONY: Yeah. And the reason she's acting up is because her friend Wayne passed away from his cancer.
JULIA: Well, why didn't she just tell us.
ANTHONY: I think the reality hasn't set in yet.
MARY JO: From what she told me, her and Wayne were quite close.
JULIA: Well, I read this book called "On Death and Dying" by Margaret Kubler-Ross after Hayden died, and people go through five stages in coping with a tragic loss. I know I did. The first step is denial, then anger, then depression, then bargaining, and finally acceptance. Right now, she feels that Wayne is still alive.
ANTHONY: Well, Julia, I think we all need to sit down and talk to her, and let her know that we care and that we are her friends.
SUZANNE: Well, I don't want to do that. Because I am not her friend!
JULIA: (goes to the phone) Hello, Carlene. This is Julia. I am calling to let you know that the mourning of your guinea pig is over, and that if you do not return to work tomorrow, you will be terminated. (hangs up) When Denise gets back, we have to let her know that we care for her, and then let her off of work.
ANTHONY: Well, from what Etienne tells me, Denise is set on leaving.
MARY JO: I think she's angry right now.
JULIA: It's so hard to lose someone you love.
MARY JO: What are we going to do about a partner?
To be continued...

Day after the funeral at Denise's apartment. Julia, Mary Jo, and Carlene have dropped by...
JULIA: I just don't understand why you don't talk to us.
DENISE: Well, ever since I made partner, I haven't been able to make friends with you all.
CARLENE: I like ya a lot personally.
MARY JO: I do too.
DENISE: Well, I have noticed that you and Suzanne don't like me. And Bernice, well... Anthony is alright, but Etienne has been more comforting to me.
JULIA: Why do you have to leave?
DENISE: Wayne and I grew up in this area. It's just a painful reminder to be here with him gone. Besides, I got a call from Tokyo. I am going back to design dresses. You were right Julia. Sugarbaker's is an interior design firm, not a dress shop. I know that I have cost you some business.
JULIA: Well, I do apologize for not being a bigger sport. I am truly sorry.
DENISE: It's okay. My plane is leaving in two hours. I wish you all the best of luck.
With that, the scene transitions back to Sugarbaker's...
MARY JO: Julia is really feeling guilty now.
CARLENE: I can tell.
JULIA: Carlene, Mary Jo, I do appreciate that you don't talk like I can't hear you, because I can hear you. Anthony, what's that look of panic on your face.
ANTHONY: Well, I found us a partner.
MARY JO: Who?
SUZANNE: Surprise! I have bought into the business! It's going to be like old times again!
ANTHONY: Old times.
SUZANNE: Anthony, could you wax my legs? Consuela is out of town-- (voices trail as they head into the store room)
DENISE: Hello?
JULIA: Denise, what are you doing here?
DENISE: I have something for you all. (pulls out three exotic dresses) This is my latest design.
JULIA: They're beautiful.
MARY JO: I hope they sell.
CARLENE: Oh, I just love it. I am gonna put it on now.
JULIA: Denise, I wish you nothing but the best of luck in Japan.
DENISE: Thank you. I have to leave now. I hope your business booms. (she leaves)
CARLENE: Well that's just great!
MARY JO: What Carlene?
BERNICE: (comes out with the dress on) Come on girls! I want to go see that new Jackie Chan movie, and let him know that I am a fan!
JULIA: Really, some things just never change.
END
