Netflix Moves into MMA with Ronda Rousey & Gina Carano Fight

Netflix is getting into the MMA world and is staging a fight between two of sports most successful female competitors: Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano.

It marks Netflix’s first-ever live MMA broadcast.

The fight will take place May 16 at the Intuit Dome in LA and will be professionally sanctioned under the Unified Rules of MMA and contested over five, 5-minute rounds using 4oz gloves, inside a hexagon cage.

It also marks the first MMA fight for Jake Paul’s MVP, which has staged a number of boxing matches for Netflix including the fight between Paul and Mike Tyson.

“Been waiting so long to announce this: Me and Gina Carano are gonna throw down in the biggest super fight in women’s combat sport history,” said Rousey. “And we’re partnering with the fighter-first promotion MVP as well as the biggest and baddest streamer on the planet Netflix. This is for all MMA fans past, present and future.”

“Ronda came to me and said there is only one person she would make a comeback for and it has been her dream to make this fight happen between us,” said Gina Carano.

“She thanked me for opening up doors for her in her career and was respectful in asking for this fight to happen. This is an honor. I believe I will walk out of this fight with the win and I anticipate it will not come easy, which I welcome. This is as much for Ronda and me as it is for the fans and mixed martial arts community. What a time to be alive.”

Ronda Rousey's storied MMA career could end only one way: in the first round via armbar.

Rousey (13-2), 39, turned back the clock on Saturday inside Intuit Dome, submitting Gina Carano (7-3) in 17 seconds with her signature submission.

The 145-pound featherweight bout headlined Jake Paul's Most Valuable Promotions' first MMA card on Netflix. The result was probably inevitable -- Carano, 44, hadn't fought since 2009 and represented a different era from Rousey -- but it was special to Rousey, nonetheless.

"I was hoping to come out as unscathed as possible," Rousey said of the quick finish. "I didn't really want to hurt her. It was beautiful martial arts, that's what I think that was. It was art."

The much anticipated Netflix MMA card headlined by Gina Carano and Ronda Rousey pulled in an estimated audience of roughly 12 million viewers.

The Netflix/Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) card drew an average minute audience (AMA) of 12.4 million Live+1 viewers globally, per VideoAmp, G&G Closed Circuit Events, and Netflix data. Viewership peaked with nearly 17 million viewers watching the Rousey vs. Carano fight.
