I thought it was good
Here are some of the comments ... Paul Henning said in an interview that Bea wanted to play granny but he thought she looked too young. And then Bea was the one that suggested Irene Ryan. Worked out good for everybody This is the story I heard: During the casting call, Paul Henning told Bea she was his choice for Granny on the Beverly Hillbillies. When she was told about the character, she told him, "With these hooters? What you want is her." And she pointed to ("hooterless") Irene Ryan. Of course, Irene was hired. So, Bea, in effect, "cast" Irene as Granny. As a reward and a consolation prize, Paul wrote her into the scripts as Cousin Pearl Later, he had Pearl move into the Beverly Hills mansion. (Along with Max Baer, Jr., Jethro, also playing his sister, Jethrine.) The tensions between her character and Irene's spoiled the atmosphere that was required. When Henning was given the chance for another show, he, of course, created it with Bea in mind as being the show's matriarch, Kate. And guess why Henning named the town Hooterville I had heard that Bea was Paul's first choice to play granny on Beverly Hillbillies, but Irene Ryan just blew everyone away - including Bea, who saw her audition and was reported to gave said "that's your granny". The information you have on Sharon Tate and the Playboy photos is wrong. This was 1963, way before she did the photos which weren't done until 1966 after she was cast in Roman Polanski's "T?he Fearless Vampire Killers." Those were done on the set of that film way after she was originally cast "Petticoat Junction." I don't know where you got your information, but it's wrong. The reason she was pulled out of PJ is because her agent, Martin Ransohoff wanted to save her for 'bigger things." That was the reason for the dark wig in "The Beverly Hillbillies" as Janet Trego. So no.Those photos didn't come out until the March 1967 edition. FUN FACT: Linda Kaye Henning played the voice of "Jethrine" on the tv show "The Beverly Hillbillies". gene autry and roy rogers side kick ! smiley burnett ! Ah yes. The 1960's sitcom based around a brothel at the end of a rail spur. Yes, BROTHEL. Three young women with no visible means of support, who openly display their sexuality when the train arrives? With an older woman running the place and Uncle Joe keeping the patrons in line? And sometimes the women change? What did you think it was? |

That last comment was extremely flippant and an affront to fans of PJ. They were three young women, yes -- but emphasis on young. They were Kate's daughters, they were still school age. The hotel was the "means of support" for the family.
The commenter had his mind in the gutter. Right, CBS would air a show about a brothel -- come on, what a stupid remark. Anything wholesome and practically 100% innocent had to be turned into a dark fantasy for that guy. |

I agree -- I included that post because that NEVER EVER crossed my mind and caught me off guard when I read it, that someone would actually have that cross their mind +-
