Anyone remember Magilla Gorila? It started out in syndication like Peter Potamus in 1964 before before moving over to ABC's Saturday morning cartoon lineup. It had a great theme song that had a line of product placement that went "He's really Ideal." Ideal was the show's sponsor. Magilla Gorilla was the last surviving tenant of Peebles Pet Shop who put a drain on the owner's business because nobody wanted to buy him expect for a little girl named Ogee, who sounded a lot like Pebbles since she was voiced by the same actress who played her, Jean VanderPyl.
Other segments included Ricochet Rabbit and Droop-a-Long, and Mushmouse and Punkin' Puss. There were also Breezly and Sneezly and Yippy, Yappy and Yahooey. |

Magilla is currently on MeTV Toons. I lean more toward the aupporting cartoon “Punkin’ Puss & Mushmouse,” but YMMV.
I texted someone just yesterday about a bad joke in “Magilla” that may have been in one of fhe early episodes, and it seemed to me that the writers just couldn’t wait to put it in the show. It had to do with Magilla accidentally joining the Army, to where some NCO or officer was talking to his other men about the advantage of having Magilla: “He would be great for gorilla warfare.” Facepalm…. I remember one ep that “seemed” longer than others, but that was just me: “Makin’ with the Magilla,” which had a whole song with that name in the ep. It turns out that I recently read that it was none other than Little Eva, who hit #1 with the original “The Loco-Motion” in 1962. That was cool. I also read that the very few 1966 Magilla episodes had Mr Peebles vpiced by someone else (Don Messick?) because the original voice, Howard Morris, had a falling out with Hanna-Barbera. Hmm. cd |
