Have fashion and hair styles stayed the same the past 30 years?

That’s the question, and if so, why?

I have noticed watching programs from the 1990’s and the 00’s that fashion and hair styles are about what they are now. Seems to me that clothing and hair styles have not changed significantly the past thirty years. Watch a show like Everybody Loves Raymond for example. Has styles changed?

But if we go back to the previous decades, starting with the 1980’s, 1970’s, 1960’s and 1950’s, there was a marked change in clothes and hairstyles. We can see an obscure television show from the 1970’s and. An easily pinpoint the decade. But show a program (that failed and forgotten) from twenty or twenty five years ago and except for the technology (like flip phones) we couldn’t tell.

I’m I missing something? I’m 58 so I have lived every full decade since the 1970’s so I’ve seen a bit.

Anyone else see or not see the same thing?

I think decade styles have ceased. The 70s had a style, as did the 80s, the 90s, but to me, everything from 2000 to now has been about the same and just merges together

They have changed but in more subtle ways. The most drastic style changes was going from the 50's to the 60's I would say.

I remember young males having frosted hair in the early 2000s. I believe it started from late 90s boy bands and crept into early 2000s.

I remember girls having choker necklaces around early 2000s.

I don't know exactly when it started, but I've been seeing more younger men with the "eyebrow slit". That seems to be more common among black/latino men from what I've seen.

Yes. The things JamesG just mentioned. . And with girls, About 20 - 25 years ago the flat iron, straightening irons were so popular . Really stick straight long hair was in. Still is, but not AS flat and SO stick straight as back than.

And hip hugger, bell bottom jeans made a comeback like the late 60's, early 70's style in the early 2000's. And now they are completly out of style again.

This is so true. Look at a What's My Line? from 1956 vs. one from 1966 (they're all on You Tube). The difference is night snd day.

Check out any sitcom that bridged those decades, like Leave it to Beaver. Same thing. Look at June Cleaver of 1957 vs. June of 1963--it's almost like looking at two different people.

Exceptions will always be with us, as people look to profit from fashion changes that send people shopping. In 1979, open-toe 1940s style women's shoes became popular again.

A remarkable success has been Chuck Taylor All-Stars basketball shoes (Converse) -- they go back over 100 years, and I was wearing those in the '70s. So those transcended the decades, through the '40s and up -- and people to this day STILL wear them.

When it came to fashion and hairstyles in the 90's-2000's you can blame celebrities for starting new trends in fashion and hairstyles. Take for instance when singer Brandy debuted she made braids popular for young girls and soon every girl wore Brandy Braids as Brandy's hair style was dubbed. And when NSYNC came out Lance Bass made spiked blonde hair popular with young men and soon celebrities such as chef Guy Fieri began sporting spiked blonde hair as well and it still is a fad today. And who can remember when actress Bo Derek made microbraids popular and she is responsible for many celebrities sporting microbraids today. And I bet due to Full House you probably were a teenage boy watching it and dreaming you had a mullet like John Stamos and he also made mullets popular for guys. Also singers used to experiment with new hairstyles too. Take for example when singer Mary J. Blige released her second album she adopted a new blond hairstyle and soon it became popular and when Janet Jackson released the album The Velvet Rope Janet adopted a new red hairstyle and it too became popular. When I was a teen I always wanted and dreamed of having blonde hair but I settled for hair extensions. In fashion we saw the same thing. Take for instance when MC Hammer ruled the 90's you probably wanted to wear British Knights sneakers because you saw him wear them? And we also saw sports stars make Nike and Reebok shoes popular and I bet also you would see Michael Jordan on TV and dreamed you would wear Nike shoes yourself. But today you still see these trends and who knows what new clothing might develop and became popular as time goes by
