Default Pointless Character on Good Times

The character Bookman was unecessary on Good Times because he was nothng but the building's janitor who was not liked by none of the Evans children or Willona so I never saw the point of his existence on the show. Anyone else agree?

I disagree - I thought Bookman was funny and he became the only adult male (unless you want to count JJ) after John Amos left the show.

Look the only true true male character on Good Times was John Amos, J.J and Bookman was goofy. Bookman's goofiness was more annoying because he served no purpose on the show. He was just a janitor that the Evans family made fun of all the time.

Don't you realize that people have different opinions than you. Stop stating things as fact when they are your opinions. Technically, Bookman was the building superintendent which involved much more than just janitorial duties. This position must have raked in more money than some of the jobs that James held over the years.

I've noticed that he's posted this same topic on other boards. I just put him on my ignore list.

I'm concerned about anyone who thinks Good Times wasn't a spinoff when it really was. I'm also concerned when somebody posts the exact same topic on several boards because they can't formulate an original idea. Lil Kelso has got the right idea...*Ignore*

Now, let's not get testy, folks...it's all in fun, you know.

As for Bookman, he was added to the show as a representitve of the incompetent authority that ran the dilapidated apartments the Evans family lived in...and being such an easy (and LARGE) target, the character dissolved into the boorish buffoon we all know and ridicule (and it's a testament to the talent of Johnny Brown, the actor that gave Bookman life, that the character remained consistant in his buffoonery...not as easy a task as you might think!)

As anyone who's ever written a short story realizes, a good narrative needs conflict, something that Nathan Bookman and his shrewish wife provided in spades...so, actually, he was a very necessary character on the series, boorish buffoonery aside.

Bookman was really only funny in the presence of James Evans Senior. I wish they had more scenes together.

Then you have the whole studio audience and a lot of us to worry about. Bookman was there to add laughs. It was even noted in the True hollywood Story that his character was seen more often after James left. Give him a chance man, he'll grow on you.
--------------------------------------------------------

J.J. Michael, life is full of disappontments.
Thelma: Yeah, that's what Ma and Dad said the day you were born.

Bookman wasn't funny, it was just the things that other characters said about him that were funny.

Are you stating that as a fact or is that your opinion?
