Just did a search for "Steptoe and son.2 no results,
Is anyone aware that CATM is based on the UK Sitcom Steptoe and son? The format was purchased and "Americanised" our version is set in a scrapyard. We had CATM on UK TV in the seventies too. Kev. |

Wow, I didn't know that! I had heard of STEPTOE & SON but never saw it. I had read that SANFORD & SON was based on STEPTOE & SON. I bet that would be an interesting show to watch...

Actually, it's the other way around: "Sanford and Son" was adapted from "Steptoe and Son", and "Chico and the Man" was adapted from "Sanford and Son"(and both programs aired back-to-back on Friday nights from 1974 to 1977...and they even had similar characters, i.e. Fred Sanford/Ed Brown; Lamont Sanford/Chico Rodriguez; Grady Wilson/Louie the Garbageman; Aunt Esther/Della Rogers...except for the ethnicity of the leads, it was essentially the same show. Eerie, huh?)
![]() Additionally, tv has NEVER had two versions of what was essentially the same show air back-to-back since the heyday of s&s and CATM...(okay, "Married: with Children" and "The Simpsons"...but those are the only ones...) |
