If Metroid had an animated series produced by DIC Entertainment in the 80s

I bet these three things woud've probably happen.

1.) Samus Aran getting gender-swapped. I know that Samus would've gotten an animated series today for either Netflix or HBO Max although I'm not sure it would be in CGI or Anime form. But think back to the 80s where you had no YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat or Vine and no streaming options in your favor. Not even Myspace was invented back then. And the only competition you had on tv is either ABC, CBS or NBC. Also the producers would probably think that the animated version of the character (had her original gender been kept) wouldn't appeal to any gender at all. It wouldn't appeal to young boys because they think that girls have cooties and are gross to look at and it wouldn't appeal to young girls because Ridley would've been way to creepy, sick and gross of a character to look at. Also, the toys wouldn't sell if they are planning to do that of course.

2.) The series would've been in the leagues of The Legend of Zelda and Captain N: The Game Master by becoming more comedic and less action-oriented as the male teenage version would've been named Sammy Aran probably would acted like Kevin Keene from Captain N and quite possibly have some goofy sidekick with an annoying voice going on these space adventures with him.

3.) It would've been cancelled after a single season not only due to low ratings, but a lot of video game fans (more specifically Metroid fans) would have not known that the cartoon has existed on television at the time, but if they have watched it, they probably wouldn't have like the characters nor the riduculous plotlines.
