Default Did anyone else hate the Lamont Character?

The Lamont character always annoyed me. He was too nice for me and boring. I hated scenes with just him and Fred. And I never understood why the lamont character always actd like he was the father and fred was the son. To sum up my feelings about the Lamot character-he was very geeky for a grown man.

Basically his chemistry with Fred. Lamont may not have been as funny as Fred, but Lamont kind of set up the Fred jokes. Okay, take the episode where Fred and Lamont had to fly somewhere because someone left them something in a will. If Lamont wasn't there, it would've just been Fred acting crazy. People woulda thought Fred was crazy, but Lamont acting embarassed and telling Fred to put away the chicken wings made the scene even better.

Yeah I taped that episode about 2 weeks ago and all I remember is Fred acting silly on the plane. Especially the ending when he saw Jackie. But Lamont was his usual boring nerdy self-saying things like "Pop can you be quiet"
or one of his famous nerdy phrases

"just stop it"

I agree totally with Jenny. I re-watched the very first episode of S&S the other night, and it wouldn't have been the same without Lamont. Solomon, I too think that Lamont was a bit bossy at times with Fred, but they played off of each other and made the show what it was. Fred was the star in the majority of the episodes, but Lamont had his moments too. No one could play the "Big Dummy" better than Lamont! On a side note, that was one of the reasons that Demond Wilson grew tired of the show.. he was getting frustrated being labed and looking like the "big dummy" all the time. FYI..

Well I can understand how Demond gre tired of that role, the writers and producers could have atleast had Lamont eventually get married and have a family instead of living with his father as a man in his 30's.

I remember Solomon saying one time that he wished Nathaniel (Rollo) was Lamont. If Nathaniel was Lamont and gave Rollo's qualities to Lamont, it really wouldn't have been the same. Rollo's Lamont could've just said 'Shut up pops' and other stuff Rollo usually said and it wouldn't have been as funny.

I think why the writers wrote the character of Lamont the way that they did was to make him into more of a dummy. If Lamont had gotten married and had some kids, chances are we wouldn't have been watching Sanford and Son anymore. Usually a marriage is kind of a write out plan. See Mayberry R.F.D with the Andy Taylor and Helen Crump characters. Andy and Helen got married in the first episode of Mayberry R.F.D and they moved away from Mayberry.

Also, if Lamont had a wife it's a possibility the wife would've made Lamont stand up for himself towards Fred. See what I'm getting at?

The Lamont character could have been a little more cool. He wasn't like Rollo at all. To me, Rollo and Lamont did not look right together.I guess because one was coolad the other one wasn't. I was just annoyed at him being so nice. But atleast that didn't get in the way of the show. Also I can watch Rollo and Fred in a scene together all day long.

Lamont did have his cruel moments. You remember that episode where he stuck Fred in the old folks home? Lamont wanted to go on a cruise or something. He did come back for him, but that was a bit cruel to me. Hey pops, I'm gonna stick ya in the old folks home so I can go on a cruise. He def. wasn't very nice in that ep.

I wonder if that episode is from season one. I might have to check the ep guide..I do know that the first season was horrible because there was no Aunt Esther, Rollo or Grady.

Hmm....I don't think that ep was from season 1. I want to say season 2. Let me check my guide. Yeah, it's from season 2.

35. Home Sweet Home for the Aged
gs: Don Bexley (Bubba Hoover) Maida Severn (Miss Ecker) Burt Mustin (Malloy)

As Lamont plans to work and travel around the world, he puts Fred in an Old Folks home. Little to say, there are too many situations and frustrations, that he has to get out of there.

I wouldn't go as fas as say the first season was horrible, but as I look at different episodes over each season, I see the maturity of each actor growing into their role. Starting out, Lamont was a lot more cruel and bossy to Fred. (but of couse I think they wrote it that way). Later on, he began to soften up and listen to Fred and respect him more. (also written into their roles)..

But I do think the first season had some VERY funny shows...remember when Lamont came home with the coffins!! And the episode when the bill collectors came!!! all classics!! and very funny...

Aw man, I loved the coffin episode. That was hilarious. How about the episode where they had to move that piano for that excentric man? Another classic episode.
