How did Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves become a hit movie of 1991?

I have never figured out why Robin Hood Prince Of Theives became a monster hit in 1991 and one of the main reasons it became a hit was because of it's neat adaption of Robin Hood. I never knew why this movie got a sequel called Robin Hood Men In Tights because I guess they wanted to make a Robin Hood trilogy series based on Robin Hood Prince Of Theives success. But the Bryan Adams song Everything I Do I Do It For You became a smash hit song due to this movie. Was Robin Hood Prince Of Theives somewhat of a hit in theaters in 1991?

Like the other big budget movies Costner made in the 90's in the theater (Wyatt Earp, WaterWorld), it started out with alot of commotions and promotions, but it died down pretty quickly and forgotten. Those movies were accused of being big budget long, messy, bloated and joyless films. Especially the movie WaterWorld which was struggling at the Box Office to recover its bloated budget.
