Following the success of the first ever Sesame Street movie to hit theaters in history Sesame Street Presents Follow That Bird in 1985 Children's Television Workshop knew that a Sesame Street movie would make them strike gold but it wasn't until 1998 that we would see a second Sesame Street movie hit theaters this time featuring Elmo. And when Elmo In Grouchland hit theaters in 1998 I think the reason why it failed is because it basically had no storyline "I mean it was just about Elmo searching for his lost beloved blanket" and I think the only audience it attracted were children in the 3 to 6 year old age group and while Follow That Bird centered on Big Bird wanting to find his true identity I think Elmo In Grouchland was just meant to cash in on more Elmo merchandise and soon began the trend of other children's shows getting movies in theaters too like Barney and Thomas The Tank Engine. But you can see why Elmo In Grouchland failed because it was also meant to make Elmo the #1 celebrity of Sesame Street
