I have inquired on this board that I saw the episode of ABP at the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago. With seeing that entire episode, I noticed some differences yet again from the 1999 airing of "Archie Alone" on WCIU in Chicago.
The episode that aired on TVLAND last night cut out some things that weren't cut out of the WCIU version in 99 and vice versa. When TVLAND and WCIU aired Maude, the same things happened. For example: WCIU version: started in the kitchen where Stephanie and Archie are in the kitchen just before they started eating. TVLAND: Started where Archie is sleeping on the couch (the way the unedited did). The difference besides: TVLAND cut out dialouge with Stephanie and Archie, after exchanging looks of sadness and started while they were eating breakfast as opposed to before they started with breakfast. They also edited the part where Archie is in the bar and after he gets the call about Stephanie's skipping school, Murray and Veronica are trying to persuade Archie not to spank her. I am curious to see what they missed in part 2. Now for the "Hoaky part" of "Archie Alone". Remember when Veronica was crying about Edith dying? Well, if you watched all the episodes, Edith never met Veronica. Why would a cook cry about his boss' wife if she never met her?

I'm sure that Edith still came in the bar from time to time, and thus had met Veronica many times. We just didn't see it because Jean Stapleton had left the show.
What hurt this episode was that Rob and Sally (Mike and Gloria)declined to appear, they could have been written in as staying with Archie for a few weeks to help with the grieving process and it would have made a much more powerful episode. Or even Maude or the Jeffersons or Lorenzos could have showed up. What we had were Polly and Veronica reminiscing about Edith which didn't work as well because they were only together on off-screen time. |

Yeah, I bet Veronica met Edith off screen. Maybe they cut out of snippet where they met each other on screen? I wouldn't doubt that possibility.

We didn't have to necessarily see Edith and Veronica in the same scene . They could have known each other off camera in the storyline. Like cousin Oscar, he died off camera in the attic. Who are we to say that the family never met him? BTW RCWTV, Thanks for pointing out the breakfast scene. In the script I read for syndication there is no mention of the scene when Archie wakes up Stephie but it does show them having dialogue before their lines. In my original CBS airing, I have everything. TV Land's airing I thought there was something funny going on, just like "Soap". The editing was real bad on Soap.

Actually, Edith was the one who took the responsibility from Louise Jefferson to sell Mike and Gloria's former house to Polly and Ed Swanson. It was in the last season of AITF. That was the only episode I remember seeing the two characters together, but at least they were seen on camera together. I think that that has an effect psychologically when you get into a good program like this. |

Note: Screen Gems is notorious for it's bad and overediting, but at least for the most part, we still get what's going on in the story. |

Thats the biggest po about the overediting, ive seen too many instances where it severely affects the storyline.
I can remember large scenes cut out of threes company now than when i was little, because when i watch now, i always thing, "how the heck did they come to that conclusion!? when there is an entire scene missing. <G> |

I'm not talking about ABP now, but I've noticed channels are starting to edit right in the middle of lines. I can't remember what I was watching. Maybe it was Star Trek 6 movie that came on a few days ago. Captain Kirk was saying something and they cut to commericial before he could even get the sentence out. Surely these channels can wait a second or two before cutting to commericial. At least wait until the character finishes his sentence.

I agree. The crap editing going on these days is maddening. It's all about the precious bottom line--money, the advertising dollars. The hell with the viewers I guess.

I wish TV land hadn't edited the opening scene in the kitchen with Archie and Stephanie, especially where Stephanie reminds Archie that he told her not to touch anything in the kitchen. This is an important part which helps set up Archie's denial over Edith's death.
Between the time this episode originally aired and now, I have lost both my parents, my mother first and my father was the same way-everything in the house stayed as my mother had left it until he passed away. |

I'm sorry to hear that jon123. What you said was very interesting. My Grandma on my mom's side died in December of 1999 and my Grampa never changed anything. He depended on her for everything and now he started recently to depend on himself. My Uncle (his son) died last year so my mom is the only loved one left. It is sad that someone who you walk in life with, raising a family, and being together through the tough times suddenly leaves you. My Grampa has the ashes of my Grandma and Uncle in the living room and pays his respects (kind of like Archie with the slipper at the end).
