"Beaver and Chuy" discovery - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Just rewatched this classic episode and I made a discovery. "C. Varela" (as in "Chuy Varela") is an anagram of "Cleaver."

Clearly the writers wanted us to think of the Cleavers and the Varelas as mirror images of each other, driving home the point that (to borrow a phrase from "The Twilight Zone") "people are alike all over."

This is a good example of the kind of thought that went into the show.

^ I say that’s kind of a stretch, but I do go here often, just to play around with names, and I may add things like adjectives or the person’s job….

I have a hard time believing it was a coincidence. Granted, it's not an exact anagram ("Varela" has one too many a's compared with "Cleaver") but it's close enough to establish an identification.

In the episode it's a nickname for the boy's real name, Roberto. But someone on the Web said it was a nickname for "Jesus" (the Spanish name). I don't know the answer.

It looks like the ancient Anagram Genius site that I mentioned above is down for good. I now get a reject message. The layout is 2005-ish anyway.

Wordsmith gives anything and everything but in alphabetical order. AG was more fun.
