He knew it was real the whole time.

He thought it was fake.

He was so whacked out at the time he didn’t know what was going on.

Ozzy ended up going with the second one I believe.

He talked about this incident on Late Night with David Letterman a few months after it happened.

I'm going with he thought it was fake. Someone threw it on stage. He thought it was a rubber toy bat. Apparently bats taste like chicken.

Ozzy also talks about the accident that killed guitarist Randy Rhoads.
