July 4th I was at the drive thru at McDonald's. I was next in line to let them know I had a mobile order to pick up. While I was waiting my right foot went totally numb and I could not feel the brake pedal enough to apply any pressure to stop the car. I saw several parking spaces to my right and was able to steer the car away from other customers. My goal was to park the car then rest and see if the problem would eventually go away then go in and get my food. This did not go as planned because I could not apply enough pressure to the brake. The car jumped the curb, went down the embankment into a ravine striking a tree. Some customers rushed to help and the ambulance arrived in a matter of minutes. Except for a minor cut on my finger I was fine, but they insisted I go to the hospital as a precaution. Unfortunately one of the idiot managers at McDonald's posted on Facebook that she saw the entire thing and claimed that I got into an altercation with another customer then got mad and flew out of the parking lot and lost control of the car. The EMT's, the hospital and other witnesses all know it was a medical episode. I consider myself lucky as it could've been a lot worse.

So sorry to hear that happened to you. I agree, it could have been a LOT worse. Do you think you might of had a mini stroke, because of the sudden loss of the function of your leg? I hope not but it could be.

I know it's hard to think clearly when something like that is happening, but that's what the emergency brake is for.
Also, hitting the brake with your other foot. I understand, you're in a panic in that situation. Glad you're OK. |

Startling story, glad you got through it unharmed by-and-large.
I've noticed that I can shut off the motor to my car when it's in neutral (instead of park). Neutral can be a good option sometimes when the motor is idling. Of course, that wouldn't have helped you (needing to press the brake pedal first) -- unless you had the car in neutral prior to the numbness, while waiting in the drive-through lane. |
