Hey guys, I've added a February '77 People magazine article of an interview Freddie did with a psychologist in 1974, shortly before Chico became a big hit. Sometimes, I denied this to myself, but hurts me so much the way Fred was killing himself way before he became famous. The only thing that cheers me up is that his son didn't took those footsteps. I think Kathy acomplished a great success as raising up a kid and making sure that he didn't followed his fathers demons. That doesn't mean that I don't love Freddie sr. It's just common sense, as any of you might think.

Croiter - you did a fabulous job on the website! After reading the book on Freddie by his mother and then some of those articles, I'm a little confused. Freddie spoke about the cocaine before he was famous, etc. His mother never mentioned any of that in her book. Did she not know? Also from the book regarding the MMPI test, there is a quote "He expresses extreme alienation from his family. He perceived little love in his home. The adults in his family were seen as critical, unreasonable temperamental and even frightening. He found home life unpleasant and wished to leave home as soon as possible." Wow - his mom must have been hurt reading that. It didn't seem that his family life was bad. Maybe his instability made him perceive it that way. Very sad.

She did mention it. She mention as knowing that some of the kids were into the marihuana stuff by that time, and she tought of Freddie as a casual user of it, but she never thought of Fred as a cocaine user. Most of the mothers are the last to know, more even for a Mother like Maria who gave Freddie all that freedom when he was a teenager, 'cause she thought she had a great communication with Freddie. They talked for long hours about his future and his goals. He even called her at night to tell her at which place he was going to be at; but there was no drug talking at that time. He hid that part to her beloved mother, just not to make her suffer, like a lot of kids today (at leats the ones who care about their parents feelings

That's strange they percieved him that way about his family because from what I've read he really loved & adored his mother & thought the world of her. I read somewhere where he said he loved his dad. They may not have always gotten along but he loved him. So this is strange considering how much he loved his mom...

From the People Magazine article, Feb. 1977, from Croiter's site is this quote from Freddie: "Well, in December I got sick and went to the hospital. Then in January I woke up and I couldn't hack it anymore. I just flipped out, and I tried to do myself in with pills. I tried to OD on Valium. I just got really sick."

This is what I don't understand. Why was there no help for Freddie then? Anyone have any thoughts on this? It bugs me to think he continued through life so tortured with nobody to help him.

I don't think Freddie wanted help. I have another article where James Komack defends himself, saying "I did all of that" (try to help)...

I think Freddie didn't want the help or thought that seeking help was a sign of weakness...we don't know what went on in that young man's mind. All I do know is that drug abuse is only the "symptom" of a deeper problem. And depression is anger turned inward. He was sad and depressed long before we ever saw it. That's where the tragedy lies.

The dear sweet thing definately needed help so he could be with us here today. I suspect he thought it was weak to ask for help & thought he could quit on his own but couldn't. So sad...
