Movie Live-Action "Lilo & Stitch" Makes #1 Box Office for 3rd Weekend

Lilo & Stitch Rules Again with $63 Million, Karate Kid: Legends Opens to $21 Million
by Rebecca Rubin
July 1, 2025

Disney’s Lilo & Stitch reboot topped the box office for the second consecutive weekend with a mighty $63 million from 4,410 venues.

Ticket sales dropped 57% from its $146 million opening weekend, which is encouraging momentum for a tentpole of its size. The live-action remake has generated $280 million domestically and $610 million globally after two weekends on the big screen.

In second place, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning added $27.3 million from 3,861 theaters — and also declined 57% from its Memorial Day weekend debut. The eighth entry in Cruise’s 29-year-old action franchise has amassed $122.6 million in North America and $353.8 million worldwide to date.

That’s a promising result, except the film is one of the most expensive of all time (costing $400 million), so The Final Reckoning will need to keep climbing — like Ethan Hunt on the biplane wings in one of the film’s many thrilling, death-defying stunts — to get out of the red.

Karate Kid: Legends slashed its way to $21 million at the domestic box office landing in third place, a decent start, although one that’s slightly behind expectations.

Heading into the weekend, Sony’s PG-13 action sequel was aiming for $25 million from 3,809 North American venues. Though Legends has garnered positive reactions from audiences (the film earned an “A-” grade on CinemaScore exit polls compared to the 59% Rotten Tomatoes average from critics), attendance didn’t break out beyond The Karate Kid fans.

The movie carries a relatively modest $45 million production budget.

A24’s supernatural horror film Bring Her Back launched in fifth place with $7 million from 2,449 screens. The specialty studio reportedly financed the film for $15 million before selling foreign rights to Sony.

Critics and audiences have embraced the terrifying movie, a thrill ride about siblings who uncover a terrifying ritual at their foster mother’s home.

Wes Anderson’s latest feature, The Phoenician Scheme, opened in limited release with $570,000 from six screens — averaging $95,000 per location.

This ranks as the top screen average of 2025, overtaking A24’s Friendship with $444,759 from six screens — averaging $74,000 per location.

Lilo & Stitch Beats Ballerina at Box Office as John Wick Spinoff Debuts to $25 Million
by Rebecca Rubin
June 8, 2025

Ballerina couldn’t twirl its way to the top of the box office charts. The John Wick spinoff, starring Ana de Armas as a dancer-turned-assassin, launched slightly behind expectations with $25 million from 3,409 North American theaters.

Despite positive audience scores (the film earned an “A-” grade on CinemaScore exit polls) and decent reviews (75% on Rotten Tomatoes), Ballerina didn’t inspire much of the John Wick fanbase to get off the couch and visit their local multiplex.

The R-rated film opened in second place behind Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, which claimed the No. 1 spot for the third consecutive weekend with $32.5 million from 4,185 venues.

The live-action reboot has generated $335.8 million domestically and $772 million globally and should soon become the year’s first billion-dollar release.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning dropped to No. 3 with $15 million from 3,496 theaters in its third weekend of release.

The eighth entry in Tom Cruise’s 29-year-old action franchise has amassed $149 million in North America and $450 million worldwide to date.

In fourth place, Karate Kid: Legends added $8.7 million in its second weekend of release, a steep 58% tumble from its $21 million debut. The action sequel, which marks the franchise’s first new theatrical installment in 15 years, has grossed $35 million domestically and $74 million globally to date.

It’s a so-so result for the $45 million budgeted film, which isn’t living up to prior Karate Kid installments in terms of box office coinage.

Final Destination: Bloodlines rounded out the top five with $6.4 million from 2,867 locations in its fourth outing. The sixth installment in Warner Bros. and New Line’s long-running horror property, in which people die in increasingly insane incidents, is a huge hit.

It’s officially the highest-grossing of the series with $123 million in North America and $257 million worldwide.

At the No. 6 spot, Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme collected a solid $6.2 million while expanding to 1,678 venues.

After one weekend in limited release, the film has grossed $6.5 million.
