How did Star Search become so popular in the 80's? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Before America's Got Talent and American Idol the big talent show of the 80's was Star Search and I never figured out why or how it was big since it was launched in the 80's? Was it because it marked the start of TV music talent shows or did it have a certain appeal to it? Because my grandfather and my mom watched Star Search and they found the talent interesting to watch. Because it's amazing how many 80's singers and some 90's and 80's comedians/comediennes got noticed on Star Search like Sinbad singer Tracie Spencer and easy listening singer Linda Eder were Star Search alums. But why CBS revived Star Search with Arsenio Hall as host i'll never know in the 2000's. And the only singer that made it big was Tiffany Evans who won the only season of CBS's Star Search revival

The First Season of Original Star Seach started very good then it got very interesting & more impressive throughout entire Seasons 2 thru 8 thanks to each category but the ninth season was ok a little bit; once the Star Search reach its final three seasons of the original run, it just wasn’t the same.

I think for the most part I think if you thought you could make it big as a pop star Star Search was the simplest show to audition for and that helped you get discovered. But I read that Star Search had a rule that singing songs by Whitney Houston Barry Manilow Michael Jackson or any other artists were not allowed and you were only allowed to sing your own songs. Was this a true fact?
