Now that Hulu is under "Disney+", and Hulu is where I watch "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", I've noticed a real problem with the audio mix:
Missing in certain areas are the crowd laughs/applauses. In the first episode "Love Is All Around", Mary and Rhoda are standing in Mary's apartment. Mary is wearing a pink nighty when Rhoda walks over and asks: "Where'd you get that nighty from, Tricia Nixon?" This is where you'd hear the audience laugh reaction, only now it's missing. Instead there is a very awkward pause while both actresses are waiting for the (now missing) reaction to die down before moving on to their next lines. And it's like this in various spots through the entire episode. I bought the episode on Amazon Prime to see if this was just a Hulu/Disney+ problem and it's not. The Amazon Prime episode has the same issues. If you go to YouTube and search for: The Mary Tyler Moore Show S1E01 Love is All Around (September 19, 1970) ...you'll find the audience reaction/laughs are there (starting at the 12:32 mark). Someone who remastered "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" for streaming (recently?) has done an absolutely terrible job with the audio. They've muted audience reactions in specific areas and it's not only glaring obvious, it's hideously wrong. |
