Movie "Dog Man" Remains #1 during Slow Super Bowl Weekend

Dog Man Shows Bite with $36 Million Opening Weekend
by Rebecca Rubin
Feb 2, 2025

Dog Man enjoyed a barking good start at the domestic box office, collecting a leading $36 million from 3,885 North American cinemas in its first weekend of release.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s animated canine-crime-fighting film, set in the Captain Underpants universe, opened at the higher end of expectations thanks to great buzz and pent-up demand for family offerings. Moviegoers awarded the film an “A” grade on CinemaScore, signaling a long tail in theaters.

Another newcomer, Warner Bros. and New Line’s satirical sci-fi thriller Companion, debuted at No. 2 with $9.5 million from 3,285 theaters. The R-rated film added a soft $5.5 million from 60 overseas markets for a grand total of $15 million.

Still, those ticket sales are solid since Companion cost an economical $10 million to produce (not including its marketing spend). With stellar reviews (94% on Rotten Tomatoes) and solid audience feedback (“B+” on CinemaScore), box office watchers suggest the film could become a late-January/ early-February sleeper hit.

Meanwhile just outside of the top five, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Disney’s Moana 2 landed in sixth and seventh place with $3.2 million and $2.9 million, respectively.

Sonic 3, which opened around of Christmas, has earned $230.5 million domestically and $462.5 million worldwide. Moana 2, which landed ahead of Thanksgiving, has generated a massive $453 million in North America and $1.037 billion globally.

Sony’s R-rated buddy comedy One of Them Days, with Keke Palmer and SZA, slid to fourth place. The movie earned $6 million from 2,306 locations between Friday and Sunday, a mere 21% decline from the prior weekend.

With positive word-of-mouth, the $14 million-budgeted film has generated $34.5 million after three weekends of release.

Last weekend’s champion Flight Risk, an action thriller directed by Mel Gibson and starring Mark Wahlberg as a balding, unhinged pilot, nose-dived to fifth place with $5.6 million from 3,161 theaters.

Ticket sales declined by 53% from its $12 million debut, bringing its domestic tally to $20.9 million.

Dog Man Stays No. 1 in Quiet Super Bowl Weekend, Love Hurts Fumbles
by Rebecca Rubin
Feb. 9, 2025

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s canine crime adventure Dog Man sniffed and scratched its way to No. 1 at the domestic box office for the second consecutive weekend.

Meanwhile two newcomers, Universal’s action comedy Love Hurts and Sony’s gory slasher Heart Eyes, mostly settled for scraps in this quiet Super Bowl stretch.

Dog Man collected $13.7 million from 3,887 North American theaters over the weekend. Those ticket sales, down 62% from its $36 million debut, were behind the second-weekend projections of $19 million to $22 million.

So far, Dog Man has grossed $54.1 million domestically and $66 million globally against its $40 million budget.

Heart Eyes lead the way in terms of new releases with $8.5 million from 3,102 cinemas. The R-rated film, fully financed and produced by Scream backers Spyglass Media Group, cost a modest $18 million.

It earned an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and “B-” grade on CinemaScore from moviegoers.

Love Hurts, led by Oscar-winners Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose, debuted in third place with $5.8 million from 3,055 venues.

Neither critics nor ticket buyers liked the film, which holds a dismal 19% on Rotten Tomatoes and landed a “C+” grade on CinemaScore.

Another noteworthy release, Becoming Led Zeppelin, a Sony Pictures Classics documentary that chronicles the origins and meteoric rise of the iconic English rock band, powered to the No. 7 spot with an impressive $2.6 million on just 369 Imax screens.

The film had the strongest turnout on the coasts, as well as markets like Toronto, Cleveland, St. Louis and Dallas, according to Imax.

Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King added another $3.9 million in its eighth weekend of release.

The photorealistic prequel, which opened around Christmas, has generated $235.2 million in North America and $671 million worldwide to date.

Warner Bros. and New Line’s satirical sci-fi thriller Companion rounded out the top five with $3 million from 3,285 theaters. Despite excellent reviews and audience scores, ticket sales collapsed by a massive 68% from its debut.

So far, it has earned $15.4 million domestically and $26.7 million globally.
