In the time that stores like Kmart and Target were king in the 80's and 90's one store that was popular that had a very short life that was very underrated was Phar-Mor. Originally meant to be a drug store Phar-Mor converted itself into a store similar to Kmart and in 1990 Phar-Mor debuted a fun commercial launching the famous "Power Buying Save" slogan with a cute jingle to match. When you see this commercial you can see why Phar-Mor was a great place to shop by listening to the jingle. Phar-Mor no longer existed in 2001 but I myself had never shopped at one but they seemed to be awesome stores

I worked for one in 1991-1992. One way to describe the stores would be like a supersized CVS or Walgreens. They had photo labs and of course pharmacies.
We sold so much soda pop that it took a LOT of work to keep it in stock. We probably sold as many jars of pickles as any supermarket, and a lot of Eagle brand snacks (later a discontinued brand). One of my co-workers' main jobs was to stock the shampoo and conditioner aisle, that kept her very busy. |

I think Phar-Mor would've been as big as Target if they would've survived and I think had the founder of Phar-Mor wouldn't have had troubles Phar-Mor could've stayed alive and would've had competition with Walmart and Kmart. When I saw this commercial for Phar-Mor I thought the stores looked pretty cool. Because at the time that Phar-Mor was around drug stores had adopted the discount store type image and the drug stores went on to focus on adding things like groceries and music and video game sections and it was a smart concept and stores like Rite Aid began using this new concept of drug store. And Phar-Mor used this same concept but I also think they were trying to copy Woolworth as well. But had they survived I think Phar-Mor could've expanded into California because they only were in Florida Georgia Oklahoma and Nevada. But the commercials are great nostalgia
