Advice - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Any of you guys ever sought advice from a teacher, and do you think the teacher seemed willing to give it?

I dunno, I was just wonderin' for some reason...

Yea but only some teachers are like that...and i find its the younger ones...like in my public speaking class my teacher made it known the first day of school that if we have a problem we can talk to her about it...and all we have to do is look into her eyes and we'll know what she is saying is true...so thats pretty cool..but then theres really old teachers who you automatically know that cant talk to...but hey maybe its just my school

I've never made enough effort to find out. I stay at a distance from the profs.

It's interesting you would say that. I have two young teachers this year that are so open with us it's awesome. I wonder if that's just because they're eager or what...?

I think the older the teacher gets and the more years they're around kids, the more bitter and jaded they may become. IMO

I've gone to teachers for advice plenty of times. And sometimes, I just need someone to talk to, so I go to them. Most of my teachers have been good about giving advice. But there are one or two teachers that have no idea what to say when you go to them...

I had a teacher in college that helped me through some rough times. I never trusted my high school teachers enough to talk about my problems though because I always felt that somehow someway whatever I told them would end up getting back to my mother.

No....I never made it a point to get close to teachers. They frighten me.

Yeah, part of the reason younger/ newer teachers encourage people to talk with them is, I think, because they're eager to make a good impression in someone's life. Which is fantastic. I mean- why else would you follow the road to becoming a teacher if you didn't give a damn about the well being of the kids you teach? I'm not saying all teachers care a lot where they'd just love to talk whenever you needed to because in reality there is teachers that don't want to spend their time to help, get to know, or even talk one-on-one with their students.

Believe me, I know from first hand experience.

Then again there is several elder teachers that are good to talk to. I mean, they have years and years of teaching and living, for that matter, under their belt, and would willingly sit down and talk whenever you need it.

I was the kind of person that got to know the teachers I liked. In third grade I had one that took me out to lunch, etc. and we'd just talk about all kinds of stuff like friends. Still- to this day I know I could go talk with her.. I have her phone number somewhere. She was/is a great model, and was the one that has made me seriously consider the 'Teaching' line of work, and I give her all the credit when people ask.

Certain teacher's throughout my Elementary School Years into my Middle School Years would give their phone number, e-mail, or be in Class over an hour before it start to help out just in case someone needed to ask a question about homework, etc. Those are the ones I call good teachers.

It's not always only the 'younger' teachers that are new to the profession that are willing to spend their time to help you out. My sewing teacher in eighth grade, Mrs. Dorothy Adams, I have to say her name because she's such a great teacher and person, has been teaching for a long time. She was my Mom's History Teacher when she was going to school. That's giving you an idea of how long she's been in this profession.
The thing is... I got real close to her throughout the year. I'd move my chair up to the front of the class room during sewing and just sit and talk with her. She offered several times to stay after class to help me finish my Graduation Dress that I was making for my 8th Grade Graduation. Once we got talking she even remembers my Mom from years ago.

There is just specific people out there that are good teacher material. The ones that don't want to spend their time after class, etc.. to help you out and talk aren't exactly my idea of good teachers or role models.

I've had a bunch of teachers over the years and each acted a certain way. Most were grumpy 99.9% of the time and I've only had 3 or 4 teachers that were sweet all of the time. I know I could've depended on any of those 3 or 4 good teachers. The grumpy teachers I tried to avoid at all times.

Well, I'm no longer in school - I left 2 years ago - but very few of the teachers at my school actually seemed to care about the pupils. There were, though, a few teachers who made an impact on me to varying degrees:

My R.E./Philosophy teacher, Mr Teale, was great. He was more like a friend than a teacher. I remember lending him a bunch of my CD's once - he was cool. I still see him sometimes - I always say 'hi'.

My English teacher, Mrs Brown, was cool. When I was in 5th Year I wrote an essay about how I felt that gay people were treated unfairly by society. I wasn't 'out' then (to be realistic, I suppose I'm still not) but she was really helpful with my essay and the vibe I got from her seemed to say "I know what you're going through and if you wanna talk, I'm here". I really appreciated that.

My CSYS Geography teacher was an OK guy. He was a bit creepy but he took my class (there were only 3 of us) out for dinner on 2 occasions and he was always willing to help us with anything.

Yes, I have looked for advice from teachers, but it was always from the teachers I could tell were genuinely nice and caring, so they were always willing. I mean, besides friends, some teachers are my only source of advice. I can never EVER talk to my family about anything because anything I think is wrong or not what they want to hear. So I avoid them...
