Default 80's rock superstar Rick Springfield returns to General Hospital

In the early 80's, Rick Springfield juggled a very successful recording career (who can forget Jesse's Girl?) with that of soap hunk on General Hospital.

Come December 2nd, Springfield returns to his starmaking role 22 years after he vacated the part to focus on his music career.

Is he that desperate for acting work that he's going back to GH??

I'm sorry, but one sure sign your acting career is in the dumper is if you're a former prime-time star or in this case, recording star, who ends up back on a daytime soap. I've heard about prime-time actors who are now on daytime soaps and I kind of feel sorry for them. I guess a job's a job, but let's face it, soaps are the pits.

well, Rick's music career petered out in the mid/late 80's. He's done some acting roles but I think the whole "Jesse's Girl" thing has been a stigma to him.

I figure he assumes returning to General Hospital will rekindle interest in his career. He recorded a new album not too long ago so maybe this is a way to try to sell albums.

IMO, this isn't quite the same as if Meg Ryan, Demi Moore or Sarah Michelle Gellar decided to return to their old soap roles, Rick reached his recording peak when he was playing on General Hospital so if anything, returning to GH is actually like returning to his peak.

Not at all like that!! Hard To Hold was a cinematic masterpiece!! The greatest rock and roll film ever!! A film that was so ahead of its time that very few people went to see it because it just went over their heads!! Rick Springfield set such a high standard in this film that he could never do another movie because it could never be as good as this one!!

Just kidding.

We can only hope this happens!!

If it does, it will rank with other illustrious sequels like Breakin II: Electric Boogaloo and the greatest sequel of all time...Caddyshack II.

I'm sorry. I did forget that it won the academy award for "Best Picture Featuring Breakdancers."

Hard to Hold was renamed Hard To Take or Hard To Believe by the movie critics. To be fair, Rick Springfield was not the only musical star to make a bad movie, nor was this trend limited to pop. Seen Luciano Pavarotti in Yes, Giorgio (1982) lately?

The critics renamed that one No, Luciano.

come to think about it, besides Cher, Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler, are there any "pop stars" who actually transistioned to the movie industry and had more than one movie that critics and audiences both loved and really built a movie career that had nothing to do with their singing career? I know Prince had Purple Rain but the same critics ripped on his other movies, and as much as critics loved Diana Ross in Lady Sings The Blues, they hated her as much in Mahogany. At this point, I think Queen Latifah is seen as an actress first because how much her success in tv and movies have dwarfed her as a rapper and singer.

A couple of rappers have done it: Will Smith and Mark Wahlberg. Tyrese Gibson might be on his way. He has a large role in a movie called Annapolis coming out soon. Does Harry Connick Jr. count?
