Sad 2 Daytime Soap Vets Pass Away: "GH's" Stuart Damon and "AMC's" Ray MacDonnell

Stuart Damon Dies: "General Hospital’s" Alan Quartermaine had 50-Year Career on Stage and Screen
by Tom Tapp
June 29, 2021

Actor Stuart Damon, who for decades played "General Hospital‘s" Chief of Staff Dr. Alan Quartermaine, has died at age 84.

News of his passing was first reported by ABC7 Eyewitness News Entertainment reporter George Pennacchio and confirmed in a tweet from "General Hospital" EP Frank Valentini, who sent his condolences to Damon’s family before writing, “Stuart was an absolute legend of our industry and he’ll be sorely missed.

The actor’s son, Christopher, told Pennacchio that the actor had been dealing with renal failure for the past few years. Of his father’s 5-decade run on General Hospital Christopher said, “It was his favorite place to be. He loved playing Alan and was always so appreciative of that role and that job. It was his passion.

Damon first appeared on the soap as Alan Quartermaine in 1977. He remained in the role even after the good doctor’s death in 2007, appearing occasionally as the character’s ghost.

Ray MacDonnell Dies: Actor who Appeared on "All My Children" for More Than 40 Years was 93
by Matt Grobar
June 28, 2021

Ray MacDonnell, who played Dr. Joe Martin on ABC’s "All My Children" for more than 40 years, died June 10 of natural causes at his home in Chappaqua, NY, according to a report from Michael Fairman TV. He was 93.

Born on March 5, 1928, MacDonnell appeared early in his career on series such as Robert Montgomery Presents, The Jack Benny Program, Producers’ Showcase and Armstrong Circle Theatre.

While he also portrayed Philip Capice on CBS soap "The Edge of Night" from 1961-69, he is best known for his appearances on multiple iterations of "All My Children" between 1970 and 2013. MacDonnell was an original cast member on the daytime soap, which debuted on ABC in 1970, and would stay with the show for more than four decades.

While he officially retired from the series in 2009, he returned in 2011 for a number of appearances, featuring in its final episode. Two years later, he reprised the role of Martin family patriarch in Prospect Park’s online revival of the soap.

May they both rest in peace. I enjoyed watching Stuart Damon on General Hospital back in the 80's. I don't remember Ray MacDonnell, I didn't watch The Edge of Night and only watched All My Children briefly.

I didn't watch All My Children, but I grew up watching General Hospital with Stuart Damon as Alan. That's two tough losses for General Hospital--first John Reilly (ex-Sean) and now Stuart Damon. I remember hearing about Ray MacDonnell.
