Wink GI References & Such All Over TV Today

I had off from school today and, frankly, I watched a lot of TV. LOL. Anyways, there was a lot of GI references/whatever on TV today.

#1 -- Mad About You

Paul's trying to find a narrator for his documentary "The History of Television" so he's asking Sid, an old guy who's been in the business forever, for suggestions.

PAUL: "George ____ ?"
SID: "Dead."
PAUL: "Charles ____ ?"
SID: "Dead."
PAUL: "Tina Louise?"
(beat)
SID: "I can't call her."
(Paul gives him the "Sid, what did you do?" look)

I thought it was amusing....Sid's delivery of the line was *perfect*.

#2 -- VIP (yes, I watched VIP)

VIP was going after this guy who had his headquarters at 'Strip Palace' so Val and Nikki went incognito as Ginger and Mary Ann. **dies** It was so wrong...yet so funny.
"We're not only Ginger and Mary Ann. We're Lucy and Ethel. Laverne and Shirley. Sonny and Cher. Donny and Marie. All the big ones."
The audience, full of guys just old enough to have grown up w/ GI, was going...shall we say...slightly insane? LOL.

#3 -- Everybody Loves Raymond

In tonite's new ep, Debra tells Ray that he needs to grow up, so after a trip to The Lodge w/ his father he begins to feel old.
Here's the part that reminded me of a certain scene of the GI ep "Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow." -->
Ray's sitting there complaining about his aches and pains and Debra goes "Let's see just how old you are" and lays one on him. "Now how do you feel?"
(beat)
"A little tired."
That so totally reminded me of that scene in ep and Gilligan's line, "I think my arteries are hardening." Hehehe. **falls over**

As you can tell, I was bored today. I found these three things rather amusing and hope that you do as well.
If I'm totally off on the 'Raymond' thing...o wells. It's 10 PM...I'm not sane after 8. LOL.

no, you're not totally off! that sounds so like that part! lol!

i'm still sane after 8. it's after midnight that i get wacky. but i do my best thinking then. weird. i'm at my smartest right before i fall asleep....which is when most of my story ideas and stuff come. i've actually turned the light on at 3 am and climbed out of bed just to write something down that i thought of....cause i'll never remember it after i wake up. i'm rambling now. i'm done. the end.

I'm like that too! LOL. I may not be sane after 8, but I get story ideas. Last nite, after complaining about being tired for half an hour I had a brainstorm and wrote until midnight. **shrug** Sometimes I'm up 'til 3 AM writing or drawing. It's sick.

Thanks for seeing the whole connection w/ the 'Raymond' episode. I love that ep/scene of GI (please, for obviously reasons ) and about died laughing during 'Raymond' last nite. I always knew those 'Everybody Loves Raymond' writers had good taste in classic TV....

Default YAY for double dates!

**GASP!** YAY! I'm so excited! I love reading GI fanfics (b/c there aren't nearly enough)...and double romances just make it SO much better!
I'm so looking forward to reading it! (No pressure... lol)

lol. it'll be ready soon. i don't know how soon....but soon. the writing is going slow....mostly because i keep re-reading what i've wrote and i'll spend two hours just changing, adding, and editing stuff. and now that i've gotten farther into it....i want to change the beginning completely. and it kinda doesn't HAVE a beginning....because i didn't know how to start it but i wanted to write so i started from the part that i already knew i wanted a certain way. i think that last sentence made sense. lol. plus i'm struggling with the question of whether or not to make it have a problem/solution type of plot....or just make the romance the plot. i want it to be good...higher quality than a lot of fan fic out there....so i'm being very careful with what i write. i keep trying to read it from someone else's point of view to see if it all makes sense. it's finding time that's the problem. well...maybe not time as much as finding time when nobody else is looking over my shoulder. i REALLY don't want the rest of my family to know about this. they already think i'm nuts. but anyway...i hope to be finished soon. like by next month. that's soon for me. at least i know i'll have one person who will read it!

Default Ah, a fellow fanfic writer...

I know exactly what you mean. I spend an entire evening going over and chinging things I've written before...and then not write anything new for a week! I change huge sections of things, like, 3 times too...
Yeah, you're right, a lot of fanfic out there...well, frankly, it sucks. lol. I try to take my time and make it as perfect as can be before I publish it online. People that can churn out a fic in a day amaze me...then I can make fun of the fact that it's not as good as it could have been.
I totally relate to the family thing too....I wrote this massive GI fanfic which took me over a year to write and finally finished in April. I gave my mom, who thinks I'm completely insane, the web address for it. Took her, like, three hours to read it. And then when she's done she's like "Okay...so...who got shot?" "NO ONE!" "Oh..." Now I'm convinced it's unintelligible just because she wasn't paying attention because she doesn't like GI anymore. **dies** I was flabbergasted (hehe).
[Sequel's in the works, BTW. As well as a 'return-of-Duke/fighting-for-her-honor' type of dealy. lol.]

yippee!!!! sounds great! the return of duke!!?? awesome! i liked him.
i have to admit....slightly in your mom's defense....it took me a second to get that coconut to the head thing. i had to read that part twice. but i understood it. i love your story...i think it's the best of all the fan fic i've read. that one with the body swapping was just weird...and kinda...um...sick. the professor and mary ann one was actually good...but just WRONG! lol. some of the other ones look good but aren't done. i'm wondering with my story if i should break it up into parts....because if i write it as far as i want to write it.....i think it'll be a novel. lol

Aww, thanks! Well, I was trying to not tell the reader outright what happened...makes for better reading that way & you don't wanna insult your reader's intelligence. I find that rereading is the mark of a good novel -- all the books I love I've had to reread parts of to understand...so... lol.

I have arguments for both sides in the post-it-whole-or-in-parts issue. From the reader's POV = PARTS! That way we get to read some of it sooner. HOWEVER, from the writer's POV, it's better to wait just in case you wanna change something. Like, I'll copy and paste snippets here or in IMs for people to read but I won't post a whole section on fanfic.net...'cause you can't go back and edit w/out deleting the story from the site.

I love how we turn posts into our own mini-discussions, Julie. LOL.

I also love how I'm doing this and then going to watch "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World" (Jimmy Backus!) instead of doing the college app that's due tomorrow... eh. O wells...

lol....yeah it's funny how all these topics kinda turn into our own conversations. i think we're the only two who have posted here in days!

i think i'm going to keep the whole story together....because like you said....it's easier to go back and change stuff....but also because i want the reader to be able to see the whole story at once. i hate it when i read a part of a story....and then it just ends and i'm like "NOOO!!! what happens next???" and it may be MONTHS before the next part gets updated.
