Default Howard, an old fuddy duddy?

Well, I can't believe how sexist Howard was against his own daughter. He didn't care if Richie worked and got a car at 17, but he didn't let Joanie. What a crock!!! I never thought that way of Howard Cunningham, and am sorry to find out that he's narrow-minded and sexist.

Yeah, but keep in mind this WAS the 1950's!!! Besides, shes Daddys Little Girl...all fathers are overprotective. The only job Richie had @ 17 was working @ the hardware store like..once in a blue moon anyways. He didnt start getting jobs until college (Joanie was still in high school), and even those werent mentioned often (Ok, 2 episodes- 2 different jobs!!). Besides, Joanie made extra $$$ babysitting which is considered to be a small job. Heck, he didnt even want Marion to get a job because he had his pride (as most men in the 50s) and didnt want people to think he couldnt support his whole family. At the end of the episode though he admitted he was wrong and they were happy. Also, in the 50s things werent NEARLY as much as they are now, so he could afford it- they were middle class. It wasnt like Joanie didnt go shopping- she did, and HE paid for it. Obviously, he didnt mind paying for all her purchases, because if he did hed make her pay it herself! Now Im not saying that when he refused to let Marion get a job and Joanie car date I wasnt mad, but if Howard is a narrow-minded sexist, than so is Ricky Ricardo, Ward Cleaver, and every other TV father of the 1950's. JMO.
I think that just about covers everything

Angry

Yeah, I thought about that, but it still burns me up. I'm no feminist by any stretch of the imagination, but it really burned me up that the parents are so much stricter with Joanie than they were with Richie. She's almost 18, so they should've treated her more grown up.

I was surprised that Marion didn't stand up for Joanie and point out to Howard that Richie had had a car back then. Even Fonzie disappointed me in this ep. He didn't ask Richie if he'd gotten dad's permission when he got that non-stolen red convertable, but he thought Joanie should have permission eventhough she had her own $$$.

No wonder women revolted in the 60s. Life for them really sucked back then.

I know she did, which is why I was surprised she didn't stick up for her when she wanted to buy her own car. It's not like she was mooching off her parents. She had her own $$$ and was working to support the car. I think they should've supported her instead of condemning her. I'm not knocking Howard and Marion; I think they're great parents. I was just surprised they were so down on her about it.

Yeah! Howards one thing because hes her Dad and all...but Marion! Sheesh! Wasnt she the one who got went out & got a job? Wasnt she the one who entered a dance contest for attention? Wasnt she the one who read *Feminine Mystique?* I rest my case!
