What was the purpose of having Nick on the show?

I started watching the tv show again and when Nick was introduced into the show, I don't understand what his purpose was in the show. He's so annoying and self centered. He doesn't care about anything but himself. His existence in the show was a waste. What did he even do at their job? Did he even work or was he just like Francine? Couldn't they have chosen someone better to add to the show? Even his chemistry with Ann wasn't there. I'm glad that she didn't wind up staying with him.

If you watch his season, Ann writes the copy for the ads and Nick does the artwork. They show this often.

I agree with you on that one. I would have rather seen Max as a regular on that show and that season, not Alex. When did Max finally return?
