1973 Horror Teleplay Series "The Classic Ghosts" Blu-ray Set for Oct. 29th
![]() Virtually unseen since their late-night airings on ABC television in 1973, The Classic Ghosts is a series of five feature-length teleplays, shot live on videotape (in the style of daytime dramas) and meticulously restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Not only do these gothic thrillers showcase an array of celebrated actors, but are notable for having been produced by a primarily female creative team, including producer Jacqueline Babbin (Sybil) and directors Lela Swift (Dark Shadows) and Gloria Monty (Sorority Kill). The two-disc set includes interviews with Mark Quigley (John H. Mitchell Television Curator of the UCLA Film & Television Archive), Maya Montañez Smukler (Head of the UCLA Film & Television Archive Research and Study Center), and film and TV historian Amanda Reyes, as well as a demonstration by DC Video’s David Crosthwait of the technology required to reclaim the program from the now-obsolete 2″ videotape format. Available on Blu-ray October 29th. “The Haunting of Rosalind” (65 min) Two sisters (Pamela Payton-Wright and Susan Sarandon) whose affections for the same suitor (Frank Converse) leads to a tragic disruption between the worlds of the living and the dead. Based on a story by Henry James. “The Screaming Skull” (67 min) David McCallum (The Man From U.N.C.L.E) appears as a man under siege, with good cause, by the ghost of his dearly-departed spouse (Carrie Nye of Guiding Light and Creepshow). Also featuring Vincent Gardenia (Death Wish), based on a story by Francis Marion Crawford. “The Deadly Visitor” (66 min) The operator of a boarding house is haunted by an enigmatic and frequently vicious, invisible female presence. Features Perry King, Gwen Verdon, and James Keach, based on a story by Fitz-James O’Brien. “The House and the Brain” (65 min) A pretty woman becomes imprisoned in a warlock's 18th century castle, and in her state of possession, lures male victims inside. Features Carol Williard, Hurd Hatfield, Keith Charles, and Maryce Carter, based on a story by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. “And the Bones Came Together” (66 min) When a graveyard caretaker is fired from his job, he exacts a terrifying supernatural vengeance. Features Robin Strasser, Laurence Luckinbill, and Herbert Berghof, based on a story by Sholomo Keil. |
