Talking Bozo The Clown

Growing up in late 70s and 80s, I remember watching the Bozo Show at noon time which was broadcast on cable TV nationally on TV station WGN from Chicago. Bob Bell played Bozo the clown and Roy Brown was Cooky the Cook. Other big TV stations also had Bozo show played by different characters, but Chicago Bozo franchise was the most popular and successful. Those were the days

I grew up in Chicago in the late 1970s and early 1980s. I watched the show all the time. I was pretty good at tossing ping-pong balls into buckets. Unfortunately, I never attended an episode taping. I could have won the Grand Prize Game.

Thanks for video. Even if you wanted to attend a taping, you probably couldn't as it was said that once the show start airing nationally, the audience reservations surpassed a 10-year wait.

The Chicago version of Bozo's Circus was the best but it went into decline after Bob Bell decided to retire in 1984. Ned Locke was great as the ringmaster, he retired in 1976 and Frazier Thomas replaced him. It was still a good show with Frazier but just not quite the same anymore without good ol' Mr. Ned. I would say the absolute best era of Bozo's Circus ended in 1976 with Ned Locke's retirement. The second best era ended in 1984 with Bob Bell's retirement. Frazier Thomas passed away the following year in 1985.

It is no secret that Smashing Pumpkins front-man and Chicago native Billy Corgan is a huge Bozo fan.

Thanks 1960'sTVfan, Mario500 and Ponytail for comments and info. Mario500, if I was in Chicago I probably would attend that show as it souns like alot of fun. Maybe Smashing Pumpkins front-man Billy Corgan himself dress as Bozo.

I wonder if horror novel writer Stephen King is a Bozo fan since the main villain character in the movie "It" (from his novel) is a clown that have a scary resemblance to Bozo the clown.

I love Bozo! It's a shame the kids these days seem to not like clowns. Even have a fear of them! As a kid I thought they were fun !

I remember BOZO THE CLOWN.
I had a rubber bendable BOZO THE CLOWN toy back in the 1960's.

It looked like this:

Along with BOZO THE CLOWN on TV.

We had FLIPPO THE KING OF CLOWNS
on WBNS-TV 10TV in Columbus Ohio.
He was around for decades and could be found at many events in Columbus.
He had a show called FLIPPO's MAGIC CIRCUS

Then he had FLIPPO'S "THE EARLY SHOW."
It showed movies and comedy stunt breaks between showing the movie.

Dec. 10, 1953
Flippo begins decades on Columbus airwaves
The clown introduced cartoons and performed magic tricks on the 15-minute afternoon children’s show sponsored by Ward Baking Co., makers of Tip-Top bread.

“I mean, Bozo the Clown...does he really need ‘the clown’ in his title, as clown? Bozo, ‘the’ clown? Are we going to confuse him with Bozo the district attorney? Bozo the pope? There's no other Bozo.”

— Jerry Seinfeld, Seinfeld, Season 5: The Fire

I never had a fondness for any clown, they can look pretty frightening and more so to little ones...
