Exclamation A Cautionary Story (I received this in an email)

This happened to someone in Ottawa. Be aware.

I was approached yesterday afternoon around 3:30 p.m. in the
Walmart parking lot by two males, asking what kind of perfume I was wearing. Then they asked if I'd like to sample some fabulous scent they were willing to sell me at a very reasonable rate. I probably would have agreed had I not received an email some weeks ago warning of a "Wanna smell this neat perfume?" scam.
The men continued to stand between parked cars, I guess to wait for someone else to hit on. I stopped a lady going towards them, pointed at them, and told her that I got an e-mail at work about someone walking up to you at the malls or in parking lots, and asking you to SNIFF PERFUME that they are selling at a cheap price. THIS IS NOT PERFUME - IT IS ETHER!
When you sniff it, you'll pass out. And they'll take your
wallet, your valuables, and heaven knows what else. If it were not for this e-mail, I probably would have sniffed the "perfume". But thanks to the generosity of an emailing friend, I was spared whatever might have happened to me. I wanted to do the same for you.

Blanche: There must be homosexuals who date women.
Sophia: Yeah, they're called lesbians.

If you learn to recognize an urban legend when you see one, you can start to laugh at them, instead of constantly being scared out of your wits.

The two top Urban Legend websites (urbanlegends.com and snopes.com) both debunk this story as being mere urban legend.

There has only been one case like this ever reported, and the story is highly suspect (remember: just because a crime is reported doesn't always mean it actually occurred).

You can read all about it here: http://www.snopes.com/horrors/robbery/perfume.htm

Also, the first thing I thought of when I read this was that very few substances can knock you out just from one quick sniff. This is addressed in the above link as well. Think about when people knock people out like in murder mystery movies and things....usually they use a chloroform soaked cloth pressed to the mouth and nose, and even then the victim still struggles for at least 30 seconds before being knocked out.

I urge all of you to read the above posted article to put your mind at ease, and please do your part to stop the madness by not forwarding this message to any more people.

I understand that your heart was in the right place Plata, I mean who wouldn't want to warn people about something horrible that might happen. But the way I look at is this: there are so many real threats out there in the world, and women especially can almost never go anywhere alone at night without thinking about the very real threat of rape, that we don't need to be cluttering our brains or taxing our hearts with wild stories that are untrue and much less likely to happen than the real threats out there.
